I just replaced my plastic spur to a metal spur after stripping it. Now I have found that the problem was probally related to my clutch 'catching'.

To recreate the problem with my engine off I spun the tires real fast waiting to see why the gears were catching. AFter a whil the clutch bell would catch at an angle to the engine. At this point I ask the question, is the spur and clutch to close together(?). After looking i noticed the clutch did not want to turn anymore and it was not parallel to the engine, but caught at an angle.

I decided to take the clutch bell off the engine to view the insides. Instead of bearing ball it has bearing rods. They are not equadistant, I assume the spread out when the engine is running.

Inconclusion:
1) Could the gears be to close causing the clutch to freeze at an angle?
2) Do I need to oil them (I am at work now, but will be buying some oil to check this solution)?
3) Should my cluth be tighter so it can not get this angel?
4) Are the bearing rods crossing over each other causing it to freeze?

It sounds like you burned a clutch bearing which is causing the clutch to move at different angles. There thould be 2 ball bearings in the clutch bell and it sounds like one or both have burned out.

hmm

I do not beleive my clutch assembly currently has ball bearings. I have the Inferno 7.5 Sports RTR and have been comparing its parts and assembly manual with others. (I may be missing somthing) but, mine has Roller Clutch Bearings instead of a Ball Bearing.

Here is the factory part

I guess I need to purchase these (if they are the correct size)

any comments?

Yes the second link looks like the bearing you might need. I would personally go to your lhs and bring your clutch bell and engine to make sure you get the correct diameter bearings you need.

Are they still in the cage? The roller pins should be held captive in a cage. The roller bearings will work fine although they will spin a little less true than ball bearings. I have used them for 15 years without problems, as a matter of fact they out last the ball bearings. I think that perhaps you might need to oil them, I use the grease that comes in the kit. You might also need to shim them to remove some of the slop.

I have had 2 sets go on me. The plastic "cage" cracks or breaks and the CBgets all wobly. I finally just replaced my CB and went with sealed ball bearings. Havent had a problem since.

The stock CB will not allow you to use Ball Bearings. You will have to buy a new CB if you want to change.

Wow that is amazing because I have abused my roller bearings, mainly not lubing them for tank after tank months on end. I have that set-up in my USA-1 Nitro and a couple of Burns buggies.

No, the rods were not incased. I guess it cracked and got destroyed. I replaced it with 3 bearings and it tightened up the clutch bell, but as you said I need a new clutch bell for ball bearing. It is slipping right now.

thanks for the help
