OK people, I'm brand new to the Nitro world and had some discretionary funds that I deposited into the purchase of a Savage21. The truck came with the new dual exhaust pipe that some of you gurus have discounted. My question is, what are the first upgrades I should do to the truck and what would you folks recomend that I do to get started in Nitro. Should I go buy a starter Nitro kit or is there a better product mix to spend my money on? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks

HPI nitro starter kits are cool. But I'd like to get it piece by piece. There's a glow starter with a meter on the end, the HPI glow starter does not have that. I use O'donnell 20% fuel on my RC's. I don't know alot about the HPI fuel.

As for hop ups. I suggest getting the HPI heavy duty dogbones, hot bodies heavy duty brake disc, and hot bodies wheel hubs. I would also consider the hot bodies suspension shocks as well. As for long term goals this is what I aimed at and now have:

Airtronics FM Radio
Ofna Hyper 8 Port
Hot Bodies Clutch (but it broke on me so now I'm getting the OFNA Clutch)

An HpI starter kit would work fine but sell the Original glow igniter and buy a dynamit or Hpi Glo Igniter with guage. Next, Get OFNA Hyper 8 Port engine and your ready to race!

1.5v Hobby Cell for glo's

Locking Glo Plug Clip

Couple of Spare Plugs

THIS air filter is a MUST

Fuel Bottle

Fuel Filter

I run Odonnle 20% and have great luck with it.

Some after break-in hop-ups would be:

Venom Failsafe
5 Cell 6v 1000mah NimH hump pack
Hitec 5645 MG servo for steering
HPI chrome Dog bones

Mills for when yours is spent would be:
OFNA Hyper 8 port
OFNA Hyper 8 Port Racing Model
Picco .26 Outlaw (This is the one I'm getting)

You will need some AA's to get fired up too if you dont go with rechargeables right out of the gate.

Welcome aboard!

Also upgrade to a tuned exhaust to go along with the motor saver air filter. Id go with the Hot Bodies pipe. Its a all around good pipe for the stock .21 and its affordable at @ $30. Have Fun

Thanks for all the tips gang! Will I need a infared heat temp gun anytime real soon? Also, I really like the whole cvd concept, does anyone make any that can handle output and bashing of a Savage? Thanks again for all the repies to my post!!

The HPI chrome dog bones are a good upgrade to the CVD's. Shouldnt need anything more than those.

The temp gun is a great tool to have. Radio Shack has one for less than 50 bucks. I always check the temps about half way through a tank and just after a wide open throttle run. This will ensure you catch an over lean or air leaky mill in time and dont roast it. It just becomes habbit.

Get the Hot bodies CVD's and add a 4mmx4mm set screw to the other side. Some people were losing the pin without doing this mod. They are very strong and reliable. As far as a temp guage goes, I use the onboard venom temp guage ($30)

i just put HB cvd's on and the hd center shafts, I thought it would be good since I also put in an Outlaw 26. A temp gun is going to be your best and easiest way to tune since it changes with ambient temps so you always are changing your settings, atleast in Minnesota the temps change drastically day to day lately.

venom on board temp guage might help , since you're a newbie...it will keep you from leaning out. i have one, 30 bucks, well worht the investment.

other stuff...
single stage tuned pipe
new engine
new clutch
BIG RIMS and tires
