I've been reading a book by Dan Brown called "Angels & Demons" it's non fiction but he makes many references to actualy historical figures and art work. One of which is the Illuminati.

I was curious what you guys thought of this group?

Well, I read "Angels & Demons". And on a side note it's an incredibly good book. I think it took me like 2 days to read it since it was so enthralling. Much better than "The DaVinci Code". Anyway, I digress. I don't know much about the Illuminati aside from Dan Brown's description. But it seems to have 2 sides. First, the Illuminati was supposed to be a society of "enlightened" thinkers who were looked down upon by society. People who the government tried to supress. And the list of Illuminati members includes some of history's greatest intellects. At some point this group began to infiltrate all levels of government using their financial pull and outright power to impose their will. Seems to me that's when they went psycho. Sounds like a society based on a good idea that went haywire. The interesting thing is that the "official" lifespan of the Illuminati as a formal organization was only a few years. But they purport that the Illuminati lived on behind the scenes of other organizations like the Masons. I guess my view is that the idea was good. There's even a modern society that is dedicated to the fostering of high intellect and free thinking. Mensa. Widely regareded by most to be a Super-Geek society. Well, kiss my butt because I was a member of American Mensa for 2 years. And you know what? I could find nothing interesting to do as a memeber. So maybe you guys are right. Luckily I don't forsee a time soon when Mensa is going to decide they have had enough and start trying to corrupt government. Heck, there's already enough of that....

I was reading info from this person http://www.illuminati-news.com/ and it was kind of interesting, he believes there are like 6 illuminati families, some I remember were;

Rockefellars
Kennedys

Basically some of the richest families. According to this person they own just about everything.

i just read that book. honestly that was thebest book i have ever read. it took my about 4-5 days toread that book. i was kinda wondering if all that stuff was true and if there is really a thing that all the cardinals in the world go to 15 days after the pope dies. I'm kinda interested cause i go to a catholic school( freshman in high school) and i didnt really want to ask my religion teacher cause i wasn't sure if it was true or not. but i thought the ending was starting to get kinda boring. i also think the diamond brand was the sickest thing.

Speaking of Mensa, do a search on Marilyn Voss Savant. She has the highest IQ ever recorded.
Candyman, you say you couldn't find anything interesting to do as a member. Very intelligent people need greater stimulus, and thus, get bored easily.
Ho hum, on to another thread.

Hence the reason I log onto this site like 10 times a day but don't really post anything. Sadly, I grow weary of your substandard intellects here and must find much more enriching environments in which to interact.

Oh, and I have read a lot of Marilyn Vos Savant's columns. She has one every week in Parade Magazine that comes in the Sunday paper. All I can say is that she's freaky smart. I have given up trying to solve the puzzles she posts each week...

.....it's non fiction ...

You do mean fiction, right? Not non-fiction? That was the big problem with the Da Vinci Code - the Christians took the fictional work as a non-fictional accusation and everybody was kung fu fighting . . .

:D

Haven't had a chance yet, but plan on it.

He writes books based on a made up story (that's non-fiction right) I could be confused.

Recent (could be) Illuminati activity;

"Rome, Nov. 10 (CWNews.com) - Rocco Buttiglione, whose nomination to the European Commission was rejected because of his staunch Catholic beliefs, has hinted that the Italian nominee who took his place is a Freemason."

http://www.cwnews.com/news/viewstory.cfm?recnum=33341

"As the result of intense controversy over his remarks, Rocco Buttiglione withdrew his candidacy for the European Union; Commissioner for Justice, Freedom, and Security last month. Buttiglione was replaced by Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini and Buttiglione has once again made headlines in Italy for inferring that Frattini is a Freemason."

fiction=made up story.

The Da Vinci Code (and probably Angels) took many factual events and placed and put them together in a fictional hypothesis. The problem was that everyone took it seriously, the way the Islams did with Salmon Rushdie.

Some of the most remarkabe figures in history have been freemasons. I belive there were also a few directly involved with the writing of our constitution.

You are very correct. The creator of the Illuminati was an aristocrat of that period.

As soon as I learn how to read these two books are on my list.
From what I hear they should be read in order.

My views on religion are different then most. I hear that with an open mind or from a point outside of the religions talked about in these books there is a lot to be contemplated.

What do you folks that have read one or both books think?

Oh you absolutely HAVE to see National Treasure if you haven't already. Yeah yeah I know - rated G - but it really IS a good movie, and that is a big part of it. <zips lip> :D

Eddy - it's not just religion. What's also very cool about the Da Vinci code are his accurate references to art, particularly the Louvre. Did you know there are 65,000 paintings in that buliding at any time?

That's a lot of dusty paintings. :D

That's one thing I love about Dan Brown, he mixes so much actual history and facts into his books it makes you really wonder whether he made the story up or not.

Sure, I may sound like a geek for saying this. But it's much cooler to have your web browser up and running while you're reading. Anytime he describes a place or work of art, you can just call up a pic of it. It is very cool to have books so rich in real landmarks. After reading them I could almost go to Rome or Paris and know my way around....

Ed, you cheating bastard! And I thought you were taking all those pictures of me at the ECB for a reason.....
