Just got my savage x out last night for a spin after many months of being locked up in the garage- truck went great for first tank of fuel, but second tank was a different story- had to turn up throttle trim to get the engine started, but when I trimmed the throttle back down as soon as I set the truck on the ground the engine stalls. The few times I did get it to go it wont sit at a stop at idle. I have take the air filter off and checked the idle gap / checked that the gap isn't closing when braking etc, but all is ok. So what could be the problem here? New clutch with stronger springs? Adjust the LSN? (BTW after the first run of 20 mins or so the engine temp was only up to 165 F so I assume I'm running too rich?)

My guesses its the clutch. I had a similar problem with mine. It was one of the clutch shoes had spat the spring causing it to be stuck on. Check that the clutch bell spins freely without it turning the flywheel.

Is this a new savage? If so and doing the break in, make sure you get it upto around 200 - 220F for a proper break in. If you keep running at 165 you have more chance of damaging the engine. If it has already been broken in, you definatley need to get those temps up. You need to be around the 250 - 260 area. Lean the LSN to raise your temp. From there you may have to adjust the idle again.

Forget to mention aswell, check the mesh you have between the spur and clutch bell. Make sure thats not too tight. The engine could have moved.

You were spot on OfnaHyper - I took off the clutch bell and one of the springs was gone and a second was broke! Should I replace with stock clutch or upgrade to something else? I've had this truck a while and last time I had it out it was running at higher temps (that was during the winter???) so will try leaning out until I get those temps back up.

What do you think with regards clutch replacement?

I'd just get the standard shoes and springs again. HPI's gear is well up there with the best. Mine have lasted all last year and are still going strong now. Make sure when you put the clutch bell back on that it covers the entire shoe. This will prevent uneven wear and less chance of snapping the springs.
Glad you got it sorted and wasn't that bad a problem.
Remember to get those temps up. LOL

Deffenitly a clutch problem new shoes &springs you'll be good.:D
