Today I was tuning my Maxx..... I had to reset all of my configurations.... High speed throttle=4 turns out.....Low speed=flush with the inner diameter.......

one mistake I mad was to screw the idle in all the way....... now I don't know where to put it!...... My Maxx wont start now....

Can someone tell me how many turns I should put the idle screw so it'll start?

It just turns over and over with the EZ start.......occasionally it will start....than die immediately....

Please help...

Thanks in advance!

I'm not familiar with your engine but a rule of thumb is to look down the throat of the carb after taking off the filter. Adjust the carb till the opening is the thickness of a credit card.

From what you're saying, when it does start, it will turn over and die ... that means the opening is too small. Open it up a little bit. If it tries to take off immediately after starting, it's too big. Make sure when you make your adjustments, your EPA is set to where you like it on your radio.

Turn your throttle trim knob on the radio ALL THE WAY DOWN. Take off the air cleaner so you can see inside the carb. Adjust it to make the opening in the carb barrel about the thickness of a credit card, or about 1/16 of an inch. If it sputters, but won't run on its' own, open it a hair more. When you have driven it till it's up to running temp, adjust it to a point where it idles smoothly but slow enough where the clutch doesn't chatter.
When it's set correctly you might need to raise the throttle trim on colder days to get it to start. Once it's running good, set the trim back to zero.

Thanks for the quick replies........I have already set the low speed so that there is just about a 1/16 gap in the carb..... but where should my idle screw (under the air filter) be set at? How many turns out should I initially set it?

u take off the air filter and turn the idle till their is about a credit card width it the carb throut turn the low speed needle till it is flush

Ok first make sure your opening is about 1mm open at idle. Tune your High speed till you have the right amount of top speed but not running too lean. You want a nice trail of smoke. The LSN you want to try and find where you are comfortable with the acceleration and punch!. Again don't over lean it out too much where you are getting the ride to die when you peg it. Once you have found this you may have to retune the idle so the idle is not so high, this can be a problem for tmaxxes if you have reverse. The reverse will not engage if the idle is too high. Most of the time the reverse but with the idle set wrong can make you walk the walk of shame.

Note: Tune each needle one at a time. Take your temperature with a gauge. Those 2.5's like to run hot so don't be alarmed. If you find yourself at around 275 you are fine but don't let it travel farther. after each needle adjustment run the truck around to see how she does. You will get it.

Let us kow how it works

well.....got all the settings in order.....high speed (4 turns out) low speed (flush).....opening about the width of a credit card at the carb throat....but all it does is starts then dies.....it wont stay running at all.....Frustration is setting in  ....don't know what it could be....................

Ok do you have old gas? what about your plug? you may have to start looking for air leaks...

Using newly bought (today) top fuel....... Just changed the plug about 1 hr ago.......still no go

ok what is your temperature in your area? Do you have a temp gun? What type plug and gas are you using?I have problems trying to get a Nitro ride to run right when the temps keep dropping.

When it starts, and you put in about 1/2 throttle on the trigger, what does it do? Does it die before you can throttle it?
Try raising your throttle trim to about half, and restart. Keep something in front of it so it can't take off. If it keeps running, start lowering your trim, but not low enough that the car will stall. Adjust the LSN (Low speed needle) a little one way or the other. You should notice a change with a very slight adjustment. If it gets 'piggy', turn it slowly the other way. If the RPMs pick up, and it starts to sound clean, your getting closer to where it should be. Continue to back off the trim on the radio, and if it idles without stalling, put the car down and start to give it half throttle. If it moves out without bogging or stalling, drive it around and let it get warmed up.
Now start giving it full throttle. If it starts to bog or die on full throttle, that's when you need to adjust the HSN.
Keep us posted, we'll get it up and running for you.

I am using a #59 plug....temp is room temp.....Fuel is Top Fuel 20%....

It will start and take off with half throttle....but as soon as I let go of the trigger.....it dies again.......I can't keep it running. :depress:

Just to clarify.. before you changed the needle settings it ran correct?

yep....i ran it earlier today in a little snow......a little on the rich side....but it ran well....

I got on the traxxas site to tune it and screwed all of the adjustment screws in so that I can back them out to factory settings.........then this all happened....

I might take it to the local hobby store tomorrow to see if the can help out....

I really appreciate this forum for all of the input......

I hope you didn't overtighten the Idle screw. You might have torn the o-ring. That would suck. Let us know what you find out.

Raise your idle. If you can run it at all, part of the problem is over. If it stalls when you let off the trigger, you're idle is still too low. If it stalls when you hit the brake, you need to adjust the idle so it will NOT close any farther when the brake is applied. VERY important, have your throttle trim knob on the radio turned all the way down when you adjust the idle, and keep twitching the trigger to allow the barrel to move, and 'accept' the new settings while you look at the opening. You can do this whether it's running or not.

Finally had time today to get it fixed! I took all of your advise with tuning in the carb and got it started...... I ran it for about an hour today...

Also got my aluminum bulkeads and aluminum throttle/brake servo mount on today as well! :smoke:

Thanks again for everyones help!
