I have always been an rc fan and had many different ones through the years but I am interested in a nitro traxxas truck. I have about a $500 budget and was wondering what model whould be the best one for me to get and also where is a good place to buy a full kit that comes with as much as possible because I am new to the whole nitro thing. Any help is greatly appreciated and I look foward to being a part of this fun.

Let me ask you a few questions.

What do you plan on doing with it? Race or bash?

Are you looking for a stadium truck, Monster truck.

Are you dead set on a Traxxas truck?

Do you have a local hobby shop near you? If so what vehicles do they stock replacement and or hop up parts for?

For a full kit you will want to go with an RTR, but you will still need stuff that wont be supplied with the kit. i.e. batteries or battery pack, glow plug igniter, fuel, fuel bottle, fuel filter, and a few other misc items.

With a $500 budget you should probably go with the Revo, if you want a little left over go with the TMaxx. Revo has more suspension travel and my neighbor says it owns the TMaxx on jumps and stuff. (personally I like my TMaxx but I could be a little biased ;) ) I think the HPI Savage is under 500 but I don't know. The TMaxx also has HUGE aftermarket support and parts supply.

This is all if you actually want a Monster truck, instead of a truggy.

Are you looking new or used?

I have purchased "chassis'" and "a lot (bulk group) of parts" and have built up 2 stampedes and Just got 1 full tmaxx with extras tonight and a rolling chassis so tomorrow I will have 2 tmaxx's (under $300) and with new radios and getting a few misc parts and an engine I built the 2 pedes for about $250 so thats 4 trucks with 4 radio's for under $600...they were all used and I have had some issues with one of the pedes but I couldnt really afford a new maxx all up front so I have just played here and there with everything

I'd say if your on a tight budget and are mechanically inclined get the manuals figure out what you need and take the time and watch and get a feel for what parts and watch "good sellers" and set a max on what you will bid for something...the way the hobby is you will eventually get the price you want...thats my .02

I am looking for somthing to bash i guess. I don't really plan on racing with it, jsut something to buzz around with and see what trouble that i can get into. I am not opposed to buying something used but new would probably be better because I am new to this and would be better off with something reliable to start off with. I am also not stuck on the traxxas brand but by brother jsut got a rock crawler and it seems to be a good brand. Thanks for the feedback so far and all of the advice so far seems really helpful.

If you have a hobby shop near you, then NCNitro's advice is best. See what they sell and stock parts for. I personally think a Savage is the best and most durable out the box basher.
No local shop, then you can find it on eBay or check the for sale forum here. I've found good deals both places.

I would also recommend the Savage X RTR... The truck has proven to be one of the toughest, most durable and user friendly trucks on the market. If you are really serious about getting into the hobby, I would recommend picking up the "kit" version. Assembling your own truck will really benefit you in the long run, when you eventually break something... And that WILL happen... lol Good luck...

I just got into nitro less then a year ago, I have an LST2 and love it so I'm a bit biased towards losi but smaxxin's got an aftershock in the for sale section that is a killer deal. If I had to do it all again I would definitely get a used rig in good condition like that one.
