I use an Intellect 1600 pack. It's great and performs well. I charge it with my Piranha digital peak and it's ready to go. You want to charge your hump packs at 1C (1400MaH = 1.4A charge, 1200MaH = 1.2A charge, etc.). If your charger is only capable of charging in full amp increments, then use 1A to be safe. What are you using to charge it? I wall charger is fine too.
I just picked up a 7.2v 2300mah lipo for my xl. Cost about 12 dollars more then a 6cell hump pack at the LHS I got it at. I can't jump up and down high enough or wag my tail fast enough. To tell you how happy I am with that purchase. The payoff was a huge difference from the Nihm 1600's I was using before. So far the lipo has not dropped below 7v after a 8-9 tank outting**. It could keep going for another 8 tanks before it hits the lvc.
You all know how the nihms slowly drop there voltage and the steering starts suffering. The nihms do pretty well and last longer in the lighter truggy but the XL with the moabs and digital servos can put the pressure on rx packs. I agree w o---coby the charger and method do make a difference with nihm packs. I use the mrc989 with them. Ran them through a couple of cycles (1.6a) before I even used them in the rcs.
The down side of the lipo is the upfront cost but with the prices coming down lower everyday. It is the way to go. For a good "NAME BRAND" nihm they are wanting 20-30 dollars. An example of the least expensive Lipo setup I know of.
You will need a charger capable of charging lipos.
$10.00
A UBEC so the voltage will be a constant 6v to the receiver. Unless you receiver can handle 8.2 - 8.4v***
7.00
7.4v 2100mah RX lipo pack
17.00
The piece of mind you will get at least 16 tanks or more on a single charge. You know the answer to that and it not Where's the Beef?
**Savy XL -Axail .32 - JP-3 pipe - Big A88 Heavy Moabs and it's a bit rich after my last engine mishap.I top the tank off a couple times at the house before I leave to go for a walk/bash session. I take two full 600 fuel bottles with me and they come back empty.
*** All my 2s 7.4v lipos come of the charger closer to 8.4v not the 7.4v that a 2s lipo indicates. A UBEC is a simple setup. Some may have a jumper so you can select 6v or 9v for the receiver. Then just plug the battery into it and plug the UBEC into your receivers battery slot. As the late Billy Mays might say. BAM! THERE YOU GO FOLKS DOESN"T GET ANY EASIER THEN THAT! really loud ofcouse.
