Hey guys,

My new Savage is coming later this week, but I'm dieing to know, how does this new engine perform?

Has anybody got through the break-in yet and really tested it out?

I have done the first 2 tanks today
I haven't run it on the ground yet but from the sound and a few blips on the throtle .. Its screams power... Oh and do your self a favor order up the nova muti shock towers . the stock ones put the right inner shock rubbing on the header..

Awesome, I hope this engine is beefy :)

I am aware of the shock tower problem as this will be my second savage, I just wanted to build one again, and of course try out this new engine. I had that problem before but it never actually hit the shock, my problem was the header hitting the TVP and putting a gash in the header.

Has anybody finished the break-in??

Is this something HPI should be correcting if it's a known problem? Kind of like a recall.

I apologize AC, I didn't mean to derail your thread.

BTW.....hows that new 4.6 run guys :)

The shock tower thing has been a problem with all the Savages, not just the new 4.6 kits. For me it wasn't a problem but the towers have not changed in this new kit, if they were doing a recall and changing them I think they would have already done it.

My son and I just finished building the SS 25. I've been following the posts for a month or so now and you guys have helped quite a bit just by reading thru some of the threads. I also noticed yesterday that the header was really close to the shock. In fact almost touching. We installed the reverse modules but no other hop ups yet. I've been into planes and electric but this is our first attempt at a nitro truck.

Still need to install a failsafe, nimh batteries and do the break in. So far so good but if I run into any issues this will be the place where I will turn to.

You can try slipping a small piece of fuel tubing over the chassis under the header to keep it from getting gashed. I'm also using the Hotbodies engine mount and it moved the engine 2 mm foward. No more header rubbing on the shocks.

I was thinking, HPI doesn't make their own engines. Does anyone know who makes the K4.6? Is it a respectable company?

there was a post about that but I don't think they ever figured out who made them

Hey guys,

Got my truck today :D

My first impressions of the engine are that it doesn't have as high of compression as other .28's, namely the Wasp .28. Everything looks to be of high quality. I'll post my results after I get it all built and broken in.

AC...do you plan on tearing down the motor and inspecting it?

Look here.....about half way down are some pretty disturbing pics of a new 4.6 motor not even ran yet.

Ouch, that looks nasty. I think I'll take off the heatsink and the carb and see if I see anything. I don't want to tear down the whole thing but if I see anything in the sleeve/carb neck I will be.

Thanks for the heads up on that. That K4.6 looks like it was ran with no filter.

I just took off the heatsink. Looked all shiny new in there, absolutely nothing wrong. I think the engine in those pics has been run, I can't imagine how that much crap could get in a brand new never run engine.

that engine has been run. there is a carbon ring in the sleeve. call me crazy but i dont think the manufacture process puts a cabon deposit in for ya. :)

I was thinking the same thing but he claimed it to be a "new" out of the box engine.

Nevertheless, I think I'll at least do a quick check like AC did for some peace of mind and even take a looksy in the carb throat.....did you see that metal shaving in one of those pics?

Since it is new on the market could HPI be spot checking engines for Quality Control by running them??

Yeah I saw it. I looked down the carb with a flashlight and all looked good. Lemm tell you, this car throat is huge! Its like 8.5 mm or something, very big. Should make for some good power :D

I'm already half done with my build :D

Started the break in today guys.

I must say, this is the smoothest running engine I've ever run. (5th one I've had) It started on the second pull of the cord and idled for the eniter tank without one single stall. That really impressed me, never stalled for the whole second tank either. I can't wait to finish the breakin, tomorrow hopefully :D

i may be mistaken, but dont they start these engines after assembly? test? just like a new car when it is built.
