I'm trying to repair a friend's Savage, he bought used. Engine is stamped w/.25 HPI on it. Looking to change Pull start to Roto & I see there are different Roto's for Savage. Then he tells me that the engine has been worked on. Doesn't know who or what was done. It blew the glow plug out. So when removed the cooling head I found just 1 shim instead of 3. Installed the new belly button & 3 shims & now can't get it to idle down. Instructions say Low Speed Needle out 3 1/2 turns. Hell it took 6-7 turns. It's flush w/carb body. Help anyone. Huey:angry:

Actually the low speed should be flush and so should the hsn to start with. Then you shouod tune from there.

as far as i no you dont need three shims unless your running 30-33% nitro.

and on the model upload some pics one from directly above and each side and someone will be able to tell you the model

Thank you. I just noted the "Exploded View" of the engine & that's what it showed. What is the purpose of the shims ?? More combustion ??

Thanks. I was going by the Break-in to set the hsn & lsn. Hobby Shop suggested since it hadn't been ran in a few years to do this also.
Huey

33% has more combustion so it needs more room if it doesn't have that room the top of the piston will become pitted and cause premature wear. adding more shims also changes the timeing of the motor which will always require being re-tuned. Sometimes by adding a shim you may get a little more power from it its something to play around with. And if it hasnt been ran in a long time it would be a good idea to start from factory settings and go from there bc factor setting are always rich

Sweet answer Childresshunt. I think I'll take out 2 shims, like it was when I got it. Then see how it runs. I can't get it to idle down either. Thr.trm works but then it stalls out. I'm just an Ole' Fart liking to tinker & learn. Thanks,
Huey

On my daughters savage .25 the directions show 3 shims. All three were there and if it runs different on 20 percent fuel then I'll remove them.

huh, more shims for 30% you say. wow didnt even know, guess I'm going to have to re-shim engines in all my trucks. i even broke them all in on 30%

Nitro Mix for old .25

So is it 30% or 20% fuel ?? I will take the 2 shims back out of the Cooling Head, like it was when I got it. Then see how it runs, w/20%-30% Nitro. :\

It will run fine on either fuel with one shim may have to tune a little from 20 to 30 but it will run fine but it will do damage you dont know about on 30% without adding a shim or 2

Thank you again. I will leave just the 1 shim & use 20%. I'm also stumped on the Glow Plug. Hot, med or cold ??? Then what would the Temp Range be in ?? Thank you, Dazzled Huey

You should be able to run a Medium plug. Personally I like cold plugs, I find them easier to tune with. Some will argue that point but that is what I use with 30% and have great luck with it. There is no reason you could not even run 30% as well, does not hurt to try if you wanted.

How do I upload pics from my 'Puter ??? I tried the (insert image) & it said I couldn't. I'm sorry for being a "Pain in the A ". Huey

Gotta resize them but they easiest thing to do is to put them on photo bucket and imbed them
