was thinking about getting a nova heatsink for the k46, but I'm wondering if it will make much difference. i live in the desert and it gets pretty hot 110 degrees. i like o'donnells fuel. does anyone know the percent range/difference in temps a nova racing heatsink offers?

oh i found it. it says it makes the engine run 40% cooler. is this true or an advertising gimmick?

Hmm I haven't taken the stock one and placed the Nova one on since the temps here are not hot enough to warrant a head change. I will though just probably when temps hit past 85 here. I can only say that I have a friend back in Ohio and his Nova head was not allowing the engine to warm up or reach operating temps to run.

Nova head claims are true, I've only driven with it for a couple tanks so far and the engine will not get past 200 degrees, which is a 60 degree difference from my stock Collari head. I'm also in the same boat as Jon , it hasn't gotten hot here so I'll probably see hotter temps in the summer.

hey arawak where do you bash ? I am north of you in ventura County.

cool deal i may get one. a few days last week it was 85 degrees. and i was hitting 300 degree temps w/ o'donnell fuel. i live in antelope valley lancaster/palmdale to be exact about 10-15 miles south of mojave desert. if anyone knows about the heat of mojave desert than you'll know i need whatever possible to keep kool temps.

I'm still waiting for hpi to call me back about the stripped heads on the heatsink bolts.

i snowboard with a hottie from ventura.

I was running 260 and when i put it on i couldnt get the temps above 200. So big performance gain.

I dont think lower the temp means the more you can lean it out.
I have read in alot of places that you should not tune by temp but by performance.
and only use the temp gun to get you in the ball park

this is true. Temps are part of tuning. You want to make sure your ride is leaving a nice trail of blue-ish white but more white, type smoke as you go, especially WOT. A temp gun is key to tuning if you are not sure.

Tuning by performance and smoke is key, but if that performance comes at 300+ degrees (extreme example), running a cooler head would increase engine longevity.

Remember also that leaning an engine out too much will result in less lubrication to the engine thus more wear and tear. Be sure that you are not pushing your engine without the proper lubrication. Smoke, Temps and patience can result in a well tuned engine.

You should also find oil film on the side of the TVP after running. Oil is mixed in with the fuel. If you do not find oil film on the truck then you are probably too lean (not enough oil and fuel). You should definitely see the motor blow smoke when you gas it.

also if the temps aren't as high you can get away w/ the lower oil content....my understanding is the oils doesn't get burned off as fast leaving it in a lubrication friendly state longer...I tune by sound and smoke....sometimes I know my engine is running hot but as long as it don't fade I'm good to go......30% O'Donnels

I tune to about 240. Then i play by ear and performance. I just noticed it was staying solid 200.

Every tme I try to tune w/ a temp gun I do it back asswards...I end up being real fat on th ebottom and super lean on top....I guess cause I'm trying to compensate w/ running do lean to get the top speed I want but it's a dog on the bottom......once I gave up on watching the temps I found I was running more consistently in th ecorrect temps when I checked it.....I just wait til I notice a fade in power then I check the temp to see if I was off......

i tried tuning by temp w/ not so good results. i now tune by performance and the way it revs. than i'll check the temps to see what it's running at so i dont overheat her.
