OK gang, I got my savage up and running, I am having a blast with it. Got around to picking up a raytek infrared temp gun to fine tune the beast. Come to find out, if I keep it rich enough to stay around 260 degrees the truck won't shift into second. It sounds as if it is running pretty rich too. So, if I lean it out to where it will eventually shift into second, then the temps break the 300 mark. What gives? I have made no adjustments to the truck except for the air/fuel mixtures. Thanks for all your inputs on my other posts so far!! You guys have been lots of help.

you have to run 5-7 tanks through before it shifts from what HPI has said. I would keep it on the rich side till it starts shifting on its own then ajust it,

good tip, ill keep it rich for a couple more tanks. I just found some basic nitro tunning literature on the net claiming that you shouldn't tune an engine to run at a specific temp. And the site claims that 250 to 300 is an acceptable range if you felt you needed to tune to a certain temp.

Try to keep your engine below 300º's. Anthing over could damage your piston and sleeve. I once hit 310 and ill never go back there again. Damn 90º weather in hawaii...shiznazz....

Try to keep below 300 but 320 after a wide open full throttle haul is not uncommon either. Also, where are you checking the temp? By the glo plug will be your best bet.

The Savage will begin to shift between tanks 6-9. After each tank you are turning in the High Speed needle about a 16th of a turn right? If so, once you start hitting second gear, you will prob end up just less than a 1/4 turn in from there. This will give you both performance and shifting you are looking for. If it begins to shift too fast then just go back about a 1/16th of a turn at a time until you find your happy place. The Savage, like the Tmaxx, can be 'shift' tuned with the HSN. Unless of course your shift point is just that wayyy far out of whack.

Good luck!

Well, I suppose I am chalking this up to experience then. I have been shiting too soon in the breakin process and apparently running too hot. It still runs though (luckily?). I live in Phoenix and it has been 88 degrees for the last two weeks and I'm trying to run at least a tank/day. I'm getting close to the 9 tank number and Ill treat the next mill better thats a promise. It is my first nitro anything so, I suppose junking one in the learning process would be right up my alley of education.

er uh, oops, sorry about the bad spelling, um, note to self, use better editing skills.
