How do i know what position my pistons at?

so I was told that I should always let my piston at the bottom when its shut off to cool down? How do I know that the piston is at the bottom?

And also one other question, I was looking at failsafe's, where do they hook up to?
 
Pull the glow plug and look in the hole as you turn the engine to locate the bottom of the stroke. Then mark the flywheel for future reference.

The failsafe connects between the reciever and the throttle/brake servo
