somehow, i managed to strip EVERY tooth on my spur gear.

all i have touched on this vehicle is the needles to tune/adjust it.

yet i managed to strip every single tooth on my spur gear...

any guesses? i couldnt tell if the clutchbell was stripped either.

if i was on the ground and i went to get on it...the clutchbell would just spin and never catch the spur gear. but the moment i picked the wheels off the ground the clutch would engage the spur gear and the wheels would move.

all I've done besides adjuting needles is take out the front dogbones so its only RWD. could this of caused it?

guess its time to get a metal spur gear...

do you mean the spur gear? the flywheel is attached to the motor and the clutch shoes and clutch bell connect to the connecting rod.

the spur gear is on the tranny and is plastic.

yeah i just realized that and edited my post lawl

your mesh may have been bad and could be the casue of stripping the teeth off. when you get a new spur gear get a piece of index card paper and tear a 1/2" inch piece off the wide side and fold it in half. put on your new spur gear tighten the spur nut down all the way and then back it off 1/4-1/2 turn.

put your motor back in and put the piece of index card paper in between the clutch bell and spur gear and tighten it down. be sure to use lock-tite when you tighten your motor mount screw down or the torque will shift the motor stripping another spur gear.

another thing to check is your clutch shoes and the inside of your clutch bell. glazing will cause it to heat up more than neccessary and also casue stripping or melting of your srup gear. if the clutch shoes or inside the clutch bell is glazed take a piece 220+ grit sand paper and clean the glaze off.

glaze (shiny look)

make sure when you tighten the motor down after meshing the bell and spur together. spin the spur and make sure there is no binding. it should spin pretty freely.

you could get a vented clutch bell that has slits cut into the bell to help prevent heat build up for about $9 shipped on flea bay. i and a couple other guys on here run the vented clutch bell w/ plastic spur.

i've stripped about 8 plasctic spurs before realizing to lock-tie the motor down and cleaning the glaze off the clutch shoes and inside bell.

i went to hardened bell and steel spur and it ruined my tranny, becasue ther was no week link except the plastic parts in the tranny.

gotcha.

guess ill take apart the clutch and see whats it like inside.

ill def order a vented clutch bell. now whether to get a 49 or 52 tooth spur gear...

What are u looking for? more low end or more high speed? that will determine which spur u should try...just remember that if u change your spur and CB to other than stock tooth counts, make sure u have the room.

i would stick with the 49 i found the 52 would strip more easily and its not a big differense between the 2

put your motor back in and put the piece of index card paper in between the clutch bell and spur gear and tighten it down. be sure to use lock-tite when you tighten your motor mount screw down or the torque will shift the motor stripping another spur gear.

i have personally never used paper to line up the mesh i just spin the spur and tighten when i feel the mesh is right. You don't have to use lock-tite just make sure the screws are tightened down(use pliers on a hex key for more leverage) before each run.

the paper is used to make sure it is right without wondering if it is or not. if you have a k46 big block it is best to use lock-tite to insure the engine doesn't move under high torque

use a 52 spur gear if you want more punch off the line, use the 49 for top speed but you will have less punch off the line.

i want more punch off the line so i dont need as much room to hit the ramp :D

so i might go with the 52 tooth. now to go with the stock hpi 52tooth or the Golden Horizons one...

maybe ill go with the Robinson Racing Steel combo..48t/16t. i know that would give me massive top-end.

Hey, i would get the hpi 52 if you're looking for better accelaration, but the 52 and the 49 don't differ that much like supercharged said.
