As some of you may know I recently got myself a Boxer puppy! I've had him for a little while now and I'm having a few problems.I need to know how to house break him? He's good through out the day and will go to the door 85% of the time but he gets really bad at night while we're sleeping and just goes where ever he wants to.I thought about keeping him in a kennel at night but he crys and barks so much just from locking him up in the kitchen so I can imagine how he'll react to a kennel. Also he keeps biting! My freind was petting him lastnight and for no reason at all he just went crazy and tryed to bite his face. When I grabbed him he continued to try and bite me.I held him down on the floor for about 20 minutes and wouldn't let him move at all(he didn't like this) When I let him up it was as if nothing had happened and he went back to licking and playing with me and my freind?? He used to do this allot but hasn't done it for a few weeks but I need to get him broken of this now before he's to big for me to hold down and really hurts someone. Any ideas??

here's soe things I learned. I have had dogs since I was a kid. I have three now, and they are very good dogs.

As for biting, and reaching for the face, that is what dogs do. When they are pups, they constantly challenge the alpha male to see where the fit in the ranks. They constantly challenge any new face they are not sure of.

When your dog attacks, or shows defiance, very firmly (not angry at all) roll the dog to his back quickly. Put your hand around his throat, and gently squeeze. Put your face right in his and say no, very loud and firm (again no anger).

Although it sound lame, make a low growl, and show your teeth (face to face). Then after the dog settles down (should settle quickly). DO series of quick tightening around his throat (not enough to hurt) But you ned to let the dog know he's on his back and has no control. You alos need to let him know that you could take him out at any moment.

Do this once or twice, and your dog knows it's place. You won't have top do it again. Any time this dog shows agression to ANYONE in your house. Roll it to it's back quick, grab the throat, get firm and don't let it go until it submits.

If you have little kids, have them do the same until the dog absolutely knows the kids is an alpha(higher in the pecking order)

You can yell scream, smack the dog, whatever. But they absoluely won't learn until they figure out who's boss. After you have established who the alpha is, you should have absolutely no problems training your dog to do anything. Their job 100% is to plase the boss.
My dogs listen, come when they are called, and are happy. I've never layed a hand on them in anger.

Also a quick snap to the nose not hard, but a sting. When they get out of line and do something stupid :D wil let them know te behaviors unacceptable.

As for house training, I take the dog when I find it, and do it the old school way. Show it (never rub its nose) but get it close and let it smell, toss it outside with no regard (no anger either) just tss em outside like it is how it supposed to be. When tyhey come in, never ever give them bad attention praise them even if they didn't go to the bathroom.

That lesson awesome
#1 everytime they come in when called they get a good boy. (they love it). Actually when A dog has to go, they can't wait to get outside. they know when they come back in their gonna get killer good attention.

Seeing as how your dog knows it needs to go outside. In my opnion you only need to show him who's boss and what to expect. I og outside, boiss is happy, I come inside boss is happy..

If the dog does something that pisses you off, make them submit. But remember the second the behavior changes they need lots of verbal support. So the dog jumps in friends face, immediately run over and make it submit. The second it rolls over and submits, give it good dog and let it up instantly.

That wyay they know the second their behavior changes they get an instant response.

The other thing(last resort), take your dog to an obeidience class or two. In a very short time, you'll have the dog extremely bonded, Happy, eager to please, and following directions like you would not belive.

Good luck.. sorry so long, just my experiences..

Thanks for the tips. Like I said the house training isn't going to bad but the biting is starting to kinda worry me.I realize he's a puppy and is probably teething and testing his limits but he just snaps sometimes and really trys to hurt you.I tried keeping him on his back but he kicks his damn legs and really scratched the poop out of me last night so I kept him on his stomach until he stopped trying to get away.I was also in his face saying NO while he was struggling.I just hope I can get him broken of this before he's to big to hold down LOL!! Thanks again!

Heh, when you hod him down on his back, if you slowly increase pressure around his neck, he'll quit sooner or later lol..it may sound rough, but the alternative is having a big uncomtrolable dog.

Good luck sounds like you got a step in the right direction

Lykan has some good techinques to try. You definitely want to set yourself & others up as the Alpha. You definitely want to control it now b/f it gets bigger & you end up in trouble. You definitely don't want your dog attacking anyone, b/c you are held responsible.

BTW, nice dog. If you put a ring on his eye, you could call him Petey (from the Little Rascals).

Later....

You are 100% correct, but not in all cases. and not only boxers.
Dog's that are albino are more prone to deafness, and other health problems. There not white because they have something wrong with them.
If they are all white or albino they can have problems.
Have the Boxer pup taken to the vet and have a standard checkup done. Have his hearing checked. My friend has an all white, deaf boxer, and my cousin has an all white Jack Russ ter, also deaf.
Thats why I know a little about this.
Also, I have raised many large dogs. Mostly Bull and Neopolitan Mastiffs.
Also a couple of Pitbulls along the way, and never saw "uncontrolable Biting".
Snapping, nipping, a little growl, yes. But never an attack at such a young age.
I'm going on your explanation.
Sorry to say, But you might have a puppy that has serious issues.
Check it out or try to take care of it before something bad happens.
As for the house training, get a large dog crate for him to sleep in at night, and lock him in. He'll stop barking after a while.
Let that be his safe haven, after a while he will not only get used to it, but will prefer it when he wants to rest.
Never use the crate as a punishment. Like if he pee's on the rug, don't get mad and toss him in it. Its his safe place.
If you do use it as punishment, you'll never get him back in there again.
Good luck

Well he is not an albino. Albino animals have no pigment and generally have red eyes and pink nose's.As you can see his eyes are black and he has developed black spots around his noise, mouth, and even around his neck. He's had his regular check ups with the vet as any puppy should and he is a very healthy dog.My mother has raised several white boxers too.3 of which were deaf and 2 that were perfectly fine.I don't think that their is anything "wrong" with him either. He's normally very passive and calm when it comes to being around people. It's only every once in a while that he has these outbursts and like I said he hasn't done it for a few weeks and he's pretty easy to control at the moment. It's once he gets bigger that concerns me.If he has an outburst like the other night when he weights 100lbs I don't think I'll be able to stop him as easily.

I was just trying to pass off some of what I know. I'm sure he will be a great dog. Just like you said, It's when he gets big is when you have to worry.
My dog that I have now, is the last big dog I will own. Not because of tempermant, just the shear size alone. He's old for a Bull Mastiff. (9)
He's having trouble walking cause of his arthritis.
At 145 lbs, it's not easy to help him up and down the stairs. good thing I have a ranch style home. (5 steps).
It will be sad to put him to sleep because he was here before my 3 youngest children. It will be hard on them. Also, he's the last of 3 dogs that I had at once.
But enough about that.
You have a handsome dog there. good luck with him.
And try the crate! worked for my dog's. all of them.
after he stops shitting all over your house, then get rid of it.
I dog wont poop or piss where they sleep.

Lykan has it right. It's all in the Alpha male dominance pecking order. You also need to stare him down. Make direct eye contact with him, and DO NOT divert your eyes. Even the most stubborn dog will not last long in a stare down. When they look away, they are submissive to you. You need to do this frequently until he has bonded solidly.
He's still young, so he's having a hard time holding it through the night. Soon enough he will learn that when you let him out and tell him it's bedtime, he won't be able to go out for many hours, and he'll drain his tanks rather than just do a few markings.
Good luck with him, he's a cool looking pupper.

That really sucks Ratzo. I'm truly Sorry to hear about that. I know how I felt when my mom had one of our dogs put down. She was a terrior mix and was about 16 when my mom put her down.It really is like loosing a member of the family. She had her cremated and has her on the mantle in her living room now (she's weird).I love big dogs. There's just something about them! I actually looked at an English Mastiff before I got the Boxer.I couldn't afford the $1500 dollar price tag though and my freinds Boxer just had pups and I just couldn't pass on this little guy!!I'm going to try the kennel thing at night and see if that will help until he can control himself better and I'll keep on the Alpha male thing too hopefully I'll get him broken of the biting.

Puppies have a natural tendancy to bite, just like babies put everything they see in their mouth. Biting is the most important thing you have to be firm about. Never slap a dog in the face, but give him a good tap with 2 fingers to the side of his jaw at the same time you give him a very sharp "NO". Do that INSTANTLY, every time he nips. Don't let kids mess with him and allow him to nip. Habits learned young become problems that are hard to break when they grow older.

I generally just give my puppies and nice firm tap on the nose and a big ass NO to remed this and it works great.
