Any here one ever make a rc plane? Not from a kit, but completely from scratch making your own wings and everything.

It may sound redneck, but I want to learn how to fly Rc planes and I'm a cheap person that just happened to have a couple engines and radio gear, so the first idea was Home Made!

I will be posting a couple pics in a day or two, but I just wanted to know if any one here has tried this before.

Almost forgot to add that this is just a fly, crash, glue plane to that will allow me to learn, but not be afraid to fly. I do plan on buying, building and flying a real rc plane after I learn the sticks! I'm already loving making this thing and I will probably be making a better one later on.

Phew, I'm gonna go ahead and say that's probably a VERY tall order to make something from scratch that is reliable in the air. Aerodynamics are pretty sensitive and your parts need to be nearly perfectly mirror imaged in order for the plane to fly straight.

in order for the plane to fly straight.

Fly straight?:hehe: Yea right!
I already have my flight plan mapped out

Get one of those big a$$ foam planes and use that as a plan or maybe even make some mods to it add some alum to hold the mill and what not. But you will prob be useing that flight plan! Make sure you try to fly it some where safe as to not to hurt anyone is the big thing in my book! Just my two tho. Good luck!

Yes I have made one before. It was a SPAD. (Simple Plastic Aircraft Design) Made from corrigated plastic. THe are super cheap to make, easy and best of all....VERY TOUGH. I think mine cost about $10 to make without the engine and electronics.

I've built 3 balsa planes from scratch. 1 is still flyable. Got parts cut out for 2 more. Not that hard, just takes a little time.

Try one of these. http://www.spadtothebone.com/freeplans.htm I built the BUHOR. Top of the page click "spads on rails."
Ugliest thing to ever be on the flight line, but it flew pretty good. Might cost ya 10 or 15 bucks to build? I got my coroplast at the little convenient store up the road. They just throw the old signs away. If I remember right 2 of the Coke signs will build all of it. 3 for sure.
Could build one in a couple of evenings. (Damn! Joey beat me to it. I have links though! :D )

If you want to try balsa, pick something simple to start with. And get a good set of plans.

On any build get it as straight as possible and you won't have problems flying it.

Thanks for the links! I think one of those will be the next plane I build!

I have been working on this for about 3 days, a couple hours in the afternoons and it's almost done.. I would post pics for you all to laugh at, but I haven't taken any yet. I will get some tomorrow!

No plans, but I am going by the same basic shape as another rc plane.. I really like being able to make something from scratch, so I don't think this will be my last home made plane..

You know, I'm stupid for not having a rc plane earlier. I have a perfect spot for it. Open skies and 3 big fields just waiting to be used! I can't wait!

That looks like a great plane!
I love the shape of the Fokker.

Indeed, and I believe that Fokker was a Messerschmidt.

One day you'll want to build this:

Ooo I like the jet, but even if I was a ace pilot I would be horrified to fly one..
No pics today guys, I got busy and had no time to work on it.

I want my next rc plane to be a SPAD, but I may have a hard time getting my hands on some coroplast. I will check the local sign makers and see if they will sell me some.

They will sell ya some 4 x 8 sheets. But check with the convenient store up the road from ya first. The coke signs (or whatever) that are hanging all around are big enough. Can get them for free. I got enough to build about 5 of them.

Unless ya need the thinner stuff. Guy at the sign place had to order it.

Hey that's a good idea! I will have to check that out. My project plane "feo" is almost done and the name suits it well. Feo is ugly in Spanish :hehe:

Thanks for the idea!

Wait till ya build something like the BUHOR. I was almost ashamed to get that out of the truck. Had to put it on the end of the flight line. :hehe:
Was a damn good flier though.

If ya do go to a sign place, you will be able to get different colors. Was maybe 8 or 10 bucks a sheet?
They have got all kinds of colors of the self sticking vinyl (guess that is what you would call it) I used the black for the crosses on my Eindecker.
Be a way to dress one up. Might even get them to give you their scraps if your lucky?

$8-10 Wow a lot cheaper then I figured. I know what you mean about being almost ashamed of it.. Poor Feo this is pink and blue..:hehe:
