Are there HS centerline dogbones for the savage (the ones that go from the tranny to the diffs)? I just busted the rear one. I'm not sure how much time they have been on the truck (got my Sav 2nd hand), but it just snapped. I know the stock outdrive bones suck, but I haven't seen any posts about the maindrive bones.

Thanks.

Stupid question, awesome answer. Thanks Sky. I'm tired, and I haven't been to that site. Do the centers go out often? Front wheel drive sucks on the savage, guess I'll check the lhs for some temp bones, but I'll have Ti soon.

The original stock dogbones at all locations (center front/rear and the four corners) had a design flaw in them. Notice the portion near the end of the shaft where it abruptly changes diameter. This is a focal point for some serious shear stress under high torque. That and supposedly the quality of the materials used to manufacture them was suspect, caused HPI to re-engineer their dogbones. The new stock ones are supposedly much better.

You could contact HPI and see what they can do in the way of exchanging the stock ones you have for a newer set (don't mention the second hand Savage bit...or you will be SOL).

So to answer the original question about whether or not shearing a dogbone is a common phenomena, YES. The old dogbones sucked and broke often.

Yeah, this puppy popped right at the point where it's sholdered down, and cleaner than if I'd used a Dremel tool. Snap... I'm suprised that I found the piece in the pic. Took me about 5 minutes. Thanks again. And I'll probably contact HPI anyway.

i have all titanium shafts. i think the difference from titanium is that titanium is just going to snap and harden is going to twist off. i'm not 100% sure but everything i've learned tells me the titanium is more brittle than harden steel (temp bones).

Titanium is more prone to shear stress than hardened or tempered steel. It is not necessarily more brittle (depending on your definition), but it is more resistant to bending than steel.

Both have their strengths and weaknesses. For driveshaft applications, I think you have about even chances of tanking a titanium shaft as you do a tempered steel shaft.

The one I broke was steel and it's striat as an arrow, just without one bone end. I couldn't get a good pic of the end, but it looked like it was machined off, not twisted. I think I heard it snap when it went, it was only about 10 to 15 feet away.

It's kind of funny when you break something, and you feel better. Bashing is great therapy:banana:

That will happen under the right conditions. It is called shear.

Titanium is more prone to it than steel, and that is why the design of Titanium shafts tend to be a little different that what you see in steel.

i would get the titaium bones there are two things that made me buy them. they don't get that rust build up on them & they do not get out of shape, they don't twist.i have them on my savage every sence i got my picco and have had no prob.

I would hate so say it, but the Hot Bodies CVD's seem to be the best out as of now. But anything you buy that is HB, you might not get the customer service that you would expect.

i would never buy carbon steel bones from hb or anyone else just because of were i live everything rusts.i'm not nockin them they will not hold that black look but for a day.at one time there were some stanless steel 304l ones on the market.has anyone seen them?

Dude, I live 30 seconds walking distance to the beach, and I have seen no rust on my CVDs. Do you drive your RC in the rain or do you spray it off with a water hose or something? I havnt heard of the HB bones rusting until now:confused:

i'm on the water any thing cs rusts here.does not have to be wet it is the air (humid)90%.

i've tried painting them it will not hold paint i even built a powder coating bed to coat them in plastic just need to get a new air compresser old one is broke.the plastic coating has been tested in salt water it has been there for 7 yrs and no sighns of rust.

Try spraying them with a light coating of WD-40 and then whiping them off or rubbing it in. Either way, you get a water resistant coating, but it is prone to picking up dust.

Besides, the truck is meant to get beat up. If you want it for show, then chrome away...otherwise a little oxidation on the axles won't kill them.

Yeah, everytime after I clean my Savage, I spray just about the whole thing with wd-40 and blow it off with a air compressor. Another benifit other than protecting and lubricating your beast, it also makes it look new again.
