Ok, I removed the wheels, that was pretty easy!!lol. Now I'm going to rewire a hump pack in.
The question I had is, I read somewhere that if you removed a shim from under the head, it will give the truck more power. In the book, of engine parts it says (part #5229) that there is one of each .15,.25,.35. Now are these choices or are there 3 gaskets/shims under the head? If so, I'm removing one. I know I read this in a mag or something. I know I can tear the engine down but not yet. I just would like to know ahead of time cause I'm curious??

you'll be running the risk of predetonating.....best bet is to let it run as is and see what you want to make better first....if it's good already don't mess w/ it til it breaks..best to get your feet wet playing instead of wrenching....

Well, you're no fun!! lol. Okay then...I have one more question. The tmaxx has a Hurricane dual stinger exhaust. Where the hose/coupler meets the engine there is black exhaust marks. I would assume that it's leaking, if I see that??

sounds like a leak, but if its not bad, it may only leak when its stressed. (like a hard tumble or something) when you replace those zip ties. snug them down good. I've also heard of people useing a copper pipe flare kit to flare the ends of the pipe a little.

and on those shimes. removing a shim is like shaving the head on a 1:1 car. gives you more compression. but is harder on the con rod, crank, and piston/sleeve. those are there to adjust for different nitro % fuels. more nitro =more explosion=more compression. so you add a shim to lessen compression. and its the other way around for less nitro fuel. or when the mill gets more worn you can remove one to get a little pep back in it.

hope i didnt confuse you :)

good luck on your teardown.

Thanks Beason. Didn't confuse me at all. I don't have a copper pipe flair kit. I have a propane torch/solder but I don't think I purchased the flare kit. I will do that though. Sounds like a good idea. Thanks for explaining the shim thingie. I ordered the FOC part today! I can't wait to tear the transmission down. This is going to be fun. I'm having a hard time deciding which is more fun, tearing it down or running it??!! I don't get the part till next Wed. or Thurs. bummer. I might go ahead and tear it down now and get it ready. WooHoo!!

I'd wait til you have it inhand.....the tear down will be fresh in your mind.....untl you've done the tranny a few times try not to let it set for a while.......I flaired mine w/ a torch and screwdriver....heat it up and stick a beefy screwdriver in there...and spin it around th eedge at an angle and they flair out a lil...you don't need a lotor you cut the rubber coupler.....use needlenose pliers to tighten down the zip ties....oh yeah buy a HUGE bag of the little zip ties...you go through em like candy.....I bought a 1000 count 8 months ago...if the Hurricane hadn't messed up the tracks here I'd need another bag for sure.......I also gave a bunch away though.....kind of hard to say no when you have a pile of them.....

with this hobbie you HAVE to like wrenching at least as much as running. its just part of the hobby. if you dont like wrenching then this isnt the hobby for you lol. good luck on your rebuild. glad i could help

Thats what I'm saying.

As a gear head I can trully say this is half the fun of the hobby. It's cool as hell to remove the A arms off one of these trucks without taking all day like a real truck would. It's very satifying and rewarding to see something bashing after you fixed it or hopped it up also

to me wrenching is relaxing. if something is pissing me off or I've had a stressfull day. i go out to the garage and work on something.

with 3 nitros and a electric there is always something to do.

used to piss off my fiance. but now she sees that these "toys" is about the only thing keeping me sain right now.

if I've had a bad day or get bad news shes like "why dont you go out and work on your rc's" "i got stuff to do anyway"

I'm just REAlLY bad about only removing what i have to to get a job done. lol

Oh C'mon I drop mine off pop the bushings & ball joints and re-install mine in about 4.5 hours.....seriously...I do em on my ranger every 30k (2 times since I bought it).....or else the front end gets real sloppy....like it is now..thanks for reminding me...LOL....

edit: I only did the ball joints once in that time....still doesn't take long when you use the right tools

I've never really had to do ball joints before but that is one of those jobs I think should require air tools to do ;)

YEP....and a 20 ton press too....like I said w/ the right tools....

Oh hell ya, a press would be nice also. I've never done ball joints but I've done a few motors. It cost me around 50.00 just to have a machine shop swap pistons on rods for me. Anyways, I just got my first aircompressor :thankyou: It's an upright 150 max psi craftsmen and it came with some air tools also. Now it's not the best but it sure beats using hand tools ;)

check out Harbor freight...they have decent airtools that won't break the bank.....if you are using them everyday then you might want something a lil more substantial...but I got a pneumatic dremel type tool for 12 bucks.....it does 60k RPMs...cut steel screws like buttah....

Beason,

I know what you are saying. I used to dread having to wrench fearing that I would never get the thing back together, but now that I have done it a few times... there is nothing to it. Also building this kit has opened my eyes even wider... I have learned alot this week since I have started building the kit. It does not upset the finace now that I spend so much time messing with them, since I have the broken leg and can't really do anything else, but when I was healthy it would piss her off that I spent so much time working on those things. It got so bad, that she was wanting me to sell them. We finally got that worked out, but there was a time... I just told her how much money I spend on them, and now she tells me that for what I spend on those things I better get out there and use them! LOL
