Are you a serious racer or a club racer or a basher?
Reason I ask is that you've listed a broad spectrum of engine capabilities and costs.

To me, something like the 353 (which is a now discontinued model having been replaced by the Flash.12PT / Flash.12-5 Tuned) is a relatively serious competition engine; while the NT12 is an adequate touring/sports engine and can be found for about 200-350 US dollars cheaper than the competition options.

That 200-350 buck difference in the 353 (and Flash) buys you hand tuned crankshafts, ceramic bearings, and about 4,000 to 5,000 more top end rpms.
Unless you're a serious racer or have money to burn, I'd stick with something like the NT12 (or the current N12LL3/11 or N12LL5/11).

eBay is a good place to pick up older NIB engines (including the 353 and NT12's).
I see there's a Rex (Novarossi) RER 12s3 currently for sale.
Something like this is an awesome engine for the price it'll probably go for - and I believe a step up from the SX12 that you already have.

Since you only listed Novarossi engines, I've kept my response specific to the Novarossi brand, although I should point out that there are other brands out there that also make good engines.
BTW - I really like Novarossi engines myself, so I can't argue with your choice of brand.

hi there thank you for the response i wouldnt say I'm new to it all but not as advanced as some just the basics of knowing a good set up ect striping rebuilds i only use my cars at my local club track (Halifax) i see what you mean with ebay I'm just after something on the grounds of the sx12 not over the top with the wallet whats the differance between the nt12 t1 tuned new from hong kong £122 and the one i might have a bid on a idm novarossi t3 tuned by someone called Daniel Ielasi apparently just broken in at the track not raced.thanks for you info

I'm not familiar with the tuned engine that you mentioned, so to me the difference boils down to the fact that one is new and the other used.

I don't recommend buying a used motor from anyone that you don't know.

There's also enough reasonably priced unused engines on eBay, that you can cherry pick some pretty good deals.
If I was looking for a good runner, I'd be bidding on the engine that I pointed out or some of the newer (but not this years model) engines like that NT12 that are hanging around in some sellers inventory.

Anytime I buy a used engine off of eBay, I fully expect to be rebuilding it - no matter what the seller says about it.
The pictures may give you an idea as to how much an engine has been used or abused.
On the other hand, the engine may look nice and clean in the pictures, but may have some internal issues (example - raced but not broken in properly).
You just don't know and you're rolling the dice buying a used engine.

So, buying used boils down to this.
Are you feeling lucky or will you be rolling snake-eyes?
