Hey guys, I just found this site tonight and am really stoked to see so much info on the T Maxx's in one location. I bought a really nice used 2.5 which runs great and am having a BLAST laughing my butt off using the truck. I've already got two friends to buy T Maxx's also.

The problem I'm having is that my two speed transmission shifts out of first gear almost immediately, which causes the truck to lug at low speeds. I've tried the factory recommended adjustment of the spring (tightening) but it seems it is already bottomed out. If it makes a difference, the guy I bought it from did a forward-only conversion on it.

I have the factory schematic, but there are no real instructions as to the sequence of disassembly, or inspection procedures to fix this problem. I was hoping to get some info before I tear mine apart and have a bunch of pieces lying all over my work bench.

Also, when you re-assemble it, do you need any type of grease or lube, and how much?

I tried doing a search for a thread on trans rebuilding but got nowhere. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the most intimmidating part to work on! The tranny ;) Seriously, being that you have a forward only, you will have less parts to mess with. Use the exploded diagrams and just take your time. Worst thing that will happen is you can end up at your LHS asking for help hehehe

First thing first, I would wash everything with denatured alcohol to remove and small particles/debris. Once dried, put it back together and lube. I spray a very liberal coating of white lithium grease all around the gears, shafts, bearrings etc.. If it moves, it gets coated!!! I like the aerosol spray lithium for this part.

Make sure you also clean the inside of the case itself too!

You might find that just taking the adjustment screw/spring out and cleaning it up, setting it back to stock, may help your situation.

Aside from that, I can't really offer any more advise on how to fix the problem you are having :(

Now is when this hobby starts getting fun.
If you have a camera take some pics of the disassembly process. Doing this will help you get it back together if you need coaching.

Un like Christian, I would run the stock nylon gear set dry. If the FOC installed is nylon and all the other gears in the trany are nylon, Traxxas recommends a dry setup. I know it sounds odd not to use any lube on gears but thats what they recommend.

Once you introduce metal gears into the trany the story changes.

I believe we just hit on a subject that is just as controversial as politics or religion. :boxing:

Thanks for the input guys. I guess I'll tackle it tonight and try to tame the beast. :whip:

While I'm in there should I replace the spring and ball or is that something that does not normally wear out?

If you are going to replace parts, Purchase a new gear setup from your LHS. I believe they run around $11.00 or so, and you get a new clutch setup as well as gear, ball, and spring.

Have fun.

Let me open that can of worms...

If undertaking the forward only conversion, would you use the Traxxas nylon kit, or the RPM alloy or RPM steel kit?

I am tired of the standard transmission's jerky motion on low revs, so forward-only, here I come!:hamster:

One thing no one has touched on yet. You say the adjustment screw is all the way tightened, are you sure you were on the right screw? There are two screws in the tranny that can be accessed by the adjustment plug in the top of the tranny, the shift point adjustment screw and the set screw. The set screw should be all the way tightened down, the other should not be.

As far as lube, I am with Eddy on this one, I run mine dry as well. And I too went to the foc.

Good luck with it.

Yes, I believe I was careful about which of the two, closely situated, screws I was attempting to adjust. If looking at the trans from the front of the car (towards the rear), the screw I was attempting to tighten was the one located slightly to the left or counterclockwise from the set screw.

I hope I didn't screw that up, but I was trying to be very careful...:opps:

I used the Traxxas FOC for a long time with no issues.
Once I converted to a .21 it lasted...... Lets say........
Not long.:dumb:
