Thiking of doing four gear spider mod. , but don't know what wt. oil to use.I hear talk of 1000,3000,5000 etc wt. I don't have a clue on what to use . I will be bashing most of the time, but there is a oval track close by. (150-175 feet in lenght) Could someone explain to me how differant wt. oil effects anything. Thanks for your time in helping me out.

The thicker the oil the more 'locked' the diff will become. Some people actually have gone as far as to use Silly Putty in their diffs to lock them. Yes, I guess it works although I have never done it.

I have used lithium grease, 10,000 weight in heavy applications and even red bearring/packing grease. In a monster truck, heavier will be better. In my opinion anyhow.

You can go as far as to reduce it to 1,000 weight, but I dont know how happy you will be with it. Guess you could try.

Id probably go with 3-6k weight

Why run xxx wt. in the rear and a differant wt. in the front ,why not the same?

You don't want to dampen the front diff action too much or at all because it affects steering. I only run a high temp grease upfront for lubrication only. It dosent alter the diff action so I can keep my steering ability. You add different wt to the rear to add or remove amounts of posi traction to limit spinouts and to keep traction to both wheels.

In other words, when turning at higher speeds, the inside wheel needs to spin at a different speed than the outside wheel or you would get an under/oversteer/binding situation. If the diffs are locked up, they are forced to spin at the same speed. With light oil, the diff is allowed to work properly.

I just finished the 4 gear spyder mod in my SAVAGE and I used ofna 5000wt in the front and 3000wt in the rear. I havnt had a chance to test this setup yet, but it seems that alot of people like it. Ill let ya know how it works as soon as the rest of my parts come in and I get this thing back together.

Could a guy use regular gear lube from an auto parts store? 80-90 gear lube in the rear and 85-140 gear lube in the front ? Or will this be to stiff, or not stiff enough, or hurt something in the diff. Thanks guys.

Well it was about giving the fellow that wrote the guide in the first place a little credit and also because they have the whole guide with all the info you need to make it, and not just the 3 picture without further information

I can understand your point, but how would we know who wrote it. I'm pretty certain the member who post it found it on the message board he pasted here. Thus, giving that site and the user who posted it THEIR credit. He more than likely had no idea who did it FIRST.

Nobody around here is about ripping off ideas or knocking the wind out of anyone's sails. We are too laid back here for that.

Regardless, its a good idea, simple enough to do, and requires minimal parts to complete. Kinda like the carb flip for the TMaxx. After the first person did it, everyone did it, and certainly most people wouldnt even be able to tell you who did it first. doesn't matter. Share the knowledge!

The problem with giving out that link is the fact that you would have to sign up to that forum in order to read the thread. Maybe some people would think of that as being a hassle. Besides, how was I supposed to know what forum or what person "invented" this mod? Who cares!!! Was this mod your idea or your friends idea? Probably not!!! So sorry if I offended you and didnt give the proper shout out to savageunleashed but , we are all in this hobby together and sharing ideas is what make these forums stay alive. :whack:
