Ok, just out of the brake in period with my new savage and already striped the steering servo. Id like to know what everyone thinks would be the best replacement as I have NNOOOO idea what I'm looking for!! Id rather not spend an arm and a leg, but I dont want to have to buy this part again either...:\

Thoughts anyone?

check out the ace 1015 ,, i just ordered one for my savage xl,, a friend of mine has one that is still going strong after 5 years,,so must be a good one,, it runs $89. on e bay,

Hitec makes killer servos. I've heard great things about Tower Hobbies' Hobbico line as well. Just make sure you go with metal gears and 140oz+.

Well I picked up a cheapie Hitec something or another from a local hobby shop here in town just to get me by. It has all metal gears and all but its not quick to respond as the HPI servo. I only gave $35 for it though and it dosent turn as well either, of course I think that might have a little to do with my epic lack of experience with the cars all together :hehe: But I'm learning

if you're just bashing around, all metal gears is a good idea. Speed is secondairy in my mind.

How fast is the one you bought, should say on the side of the box. Somewhere around 0.17 and 0.15 seems slow.

I've put some serious coin in the servos for my Hyper 9 2.0, but that's only because I want to race it and I'm primarily concerend about servo speed.

i'd look around on maybe the rctech buy/trade forums and see if someones offering up some good used ones..... someone was selling the hitec hs5995tg titanium gear 333oz servo for like $60 or so. Great deal and would be hella strong.....

Model # HS-645MG Operating speed is 0.24.

After some experimenting with different positioning of the arm on the servo and some tunning from the controller, the speed dosent seem to be an issue anymore. Now Its the torque that I dont particularly like. (7.7kg.cm) When the truck is on the ground it dosent seem to want to turn right or left all the way until you roll forward. Seems to me that maybe a better power source might be in order? Rather than 4 AA bats... Is that a valid assumption?

The stock Hpi SF2 steering servo is indeed weak. Your current HS-645MG is a tad higher than the stock servo, and a better brand in my opinion. If you are planning to get a better power source (or increase the power source), check the power ratings for your servos. Most servos operates only on 6.0 volts. Anything in excess of 6.0 volts will fry the electronics of the servo. I use HXT 10kg servo found on http://hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=2 as my steering servo for the savage X. At that price, you could buy 3 or more metal steering servos. But if you are after speed, this servo is not for you since the rated speed is .16sec/60deg. For bashing needs, this is a good servo. You said when the truck is on the ground, it does'nt seem to turn. That's normal, since the weight of the savage x needs to be considered as a factor, also the tires are rubbing on the ground/soil or grass. Servos 10kg below may not have the sufficient power/torque to turn a heavy r/c model on dead weight, meaning without accelerating. You can use hobby grade quality brand NiMh AA batteries, that will definitely make a difference. Happy driving!
