This question is mostly for NYC and Long Island residents who own guns. MSLY, you're the only one I know on the board who owns a firearm in NY so I'll direct it towards you.

What are the regulations for owning a firearm in the NYC/Long Island area?

I know that my cousin owns one and goes to the range in Jersey. He wants to get my brother and me into it. I have fired pistols and rifles before so I'm familiar with firearms.

My brother and I were just wondering what the requirements, regulations and other laws are involved. The guns would be used mostly for sport/marksmanship and maybe for shooting dead r/c engines :whhooo:

There are no children in the house and even then, strict practices in safety are #1, regardless if there are children around.

To own a gun in NYC is probably one of the more difficult places. I live on long island and all i had to do was fill out the form... get some refrences....get a couple of passport pics....go to yapank police station...get interviewed and finger printed....actually it went really smooth... took about 3-4 months. I have heard it taking up-wards of 6 months. As long as you have never been convicted of a felony, you can get a pistol license. Its your constitutional right.

If I was going to NJ to shoot, you have to find out what the law is transferring firearms from state to state.

My cousin has run into problems shooting in PA. We live in Jerzy. Da MAN dont like it when your transport firearms across state lines.

Here in NJ getting your "Firearms Purshaser ID Card" is about the same as MSLY explained. You cannot have been commited or spent time in a mental institution or have committed a felony. It took me about 2 months to get all the paperwork taken care of (10 years ago) and about $75 in fees.

Once you have an ID card you can apply for a pistol license. They interview you to find out why you want one and cost around $50. They are good for about 6 months and you have to present it to both the place you are buying the pistol from and the city in which you live to register it. I live in what can be considered the Inner City (Elizabeth) and the rules out in the more rural parts might be abit different.

If you are planning on buying a rifle I dont beleive you need a special permit in either NJ or NY. Just your Firearms ID Card.

my god man thats alot of headaches!! here in NC when i got my last permit, it took 7 days and $10. no interview just a questionare, just a background check, no finger prints nothing. now this was several years ago before 9/11 things may have changed I'm not sure.

I thought CA was bad.
Go to any gun store they make a copy of your Drivers license, you fill out an application and pick up your new toy 14 days later. We have a 14 day "Cooling Off" period.

Or you can go to the city and get whatever you want in 10 minutes and $250.00 cash.

In AZ you fill out a form that asks you if you are a criminal or a nut. If you answer yes you can still have it, but you must promise to be good.

Into the city I just stop at the local school and get what i need dont even have to get out of the truck lol :)

That Process is just to get the handgun license. I can purchase and register a gun in one day if I feel like driving back and forth. I have a gun store that is only about 10 or so Min's from the pistol bureau so it does not take that long.

you dont need no dam liscense man what are you a little gurly just get tha thing and make sure that it aint in ya car when 5-0(street slang for cops) wanna clean the car LOL:wasted:

in kansas you answer this 15 question paper that basically just makes sure your not crazy....wait 5 buisiness days....pay 10$ plus whatever you purchased and you're out shooting beer cans at the lake.

Here in washington you may purchase a handgun, or a rifle same day. You only need to fill out the federal yellow sheet, and wait for an answer on the phone. (15 min)

You may carry an unloaded firearm (any type) in your car or on your person so long as it is not concealed. If it is loaded it must be behind lock and key (except inside your house).

My concealed permit took me 30 minutes. I payed $50 , got the prints, a fed background check, a local check, and a questionare. 3 days ater it arrived in the mail (doesn't even have my picture on it).

Now I am allowed to carry a concealed loaded firearm anywhere I wish, except. (and I do carry)
A federal building/courthouse
A bar
A school
where the owner expressely states i can't (IE casino)

I carried one everywhere since I was 18, my family came along I went and got my permit to be "legal". Funny thing Is, I've never ever unholstered it except for practice. Not even for show and tell.

Sorry looks like this thread kind of got de-railed it was a specific for diver and ihis locale.. can anyone give him more info?

here in PA you just fill out a a huge paper and and you can get a handgun shotgun or rifle the same day.And you can carry a gun unloaded in the car or carrying it. Which it is pretty simple.

Thanks for the info MSLY. I'll be looking into getting more info.

No Problem... Like I said its your constitutional right don't let anyone tell you different. Also join the NRA

To my understanding, NYC has one of the hardest firearms laws in the nation. I spoke to an authorized hand gun dealer during the summer and he told me that it was close to impossible if you live in NYC. He advised me not to bother until I move out of NYC. How true is this rumor?
If licensed,Diver and I would be firing .45's and all a bunch of competition handguns. Our family has a long history of excellent markmanship and we would like to keep the legacy going. Living in NYC seems to be the biggest hurdle to clear

I heard its quite difficult also. Unless your rich and famous. I know Howard Stern has a pistol license, I think its even a carry license. I would imagine he should have one. I guess some thin skinned people get upset by his show...

It's easy to own firearms in California... no felony arrests.. but obtaining the permit to carry a concealed weapon is another story.

Whoa whoa whoa! 3 to 4 months just to have a gun. Thats crazy, well I guess its good to have a a state that has the reputation it does but its weird to me. In AL You have to be either 18 or 21 to buy gun and ammo. Also in AL, there is NO AGE LIMIT to carrying a rifle or shot gun. You have to be of age to own but not to carry. Again, my friend anthony carried a AR15 in his back set with his clip int he glove box just because he found out he could. To get a permit to carry a hand gun around you just go to the courthouse and PD to get one. They take the guns specs down and thats about it. I mean, me and rs43drifter shoot his old AK47 and my dads .45 in his back yard. Cops are called and come out there and make sure we have atleast one adult in the house and then they leave.

Remember what Error said, something along the lines of "no more specific threads amongst members" so we helped him out by derailing it, lol.
