it depends on the car, A monster truck I would say no, A ST I would say no, a on-road car I would say it wouldnt hurt.
 
They help reduce weight.

A few new buggies like the X5 use them.

Its almost standard for on-road cars.
 
The higher end on-roads have CF pretty much as a standard. The run of the mill variety (NTC3, RS4's and the like) still use the plastic or carbon style. Graphite and Carbon Fiber are upgrades or option parts.
