First off! I got my Savage on Friday :) I love it!

Break in went well though my hand is a little sore.

My question is, when i am a running it I am not seeing a trail of smoke out of the pipe. I think I am running it relatively rich on the HSN because i am getting tons of nitro oil on the chassis, but when I was reading the book it said that you wanted to have a steady stream of smoke out of the pipe. Could it be that i am running it too rich even still that the amount of nitro is keeping me from getting the smoke stream. I have the HSN set just so that the engine doesn't bog when I am at full throttle.

I haven't invested in a Temp gun yet so I don't know what temp I am running at but when i do the "spit test" it will set on the cooling head about 4-5 seconds before disipating.

Do I need to lean it out more?

Sorry for the long post, but I am needing some advice.

Thanks,
Jon

Well, my opinion is that it is too lean, I have had a few Nitro trucks and learned my lesson by leaning the truck out too much, too fast. Leave her stupid rich, let her bog and break her in slow. Slow meaning at least get through 3/4 of a gallon before you start tuning. It may not be as hot there as it is here in Phoenix, but a good long break in will mean no over heating and a good strong (stock) motor.

Well have lots of fun with your brand new toy. Make sure that you take the time and read the manuel and don't overheat it. Take pride and treat it will and it will do the same right back.

Check your carb needle settings, I had the same problem. Make sure your LSN is turned out like the manual says. LSN is the needle on the carb slide bythe tank! Turn it all the way in then back it out 3 and 1/2 turns.

Thanks for the replies, I did reset both the LSN and the HSN and back to Factory settings last night and was going to start the tuning process all over again. But the handle of the pull start came untied and so I have to retie that tonight and attempt to get it tuned.

I think that I found the problem as to why I wasn't getting any smoke out at full throttle. I decided to go back to the Factory settings and start to retune, and when I had started to tune after break in i had only turned the LSN and the HSN a max of 1.5 turns from what they were set at when I took it out of the box, however when I screwed them all the way in to make sure that they are set 3.5 turns from closed, I had to turn each of them about 8 or 9 turns so I don't think that the factory settings were set from the start. SO I will be tuning it this weekend as that will be the first chance I am going to have to play with it.

Do you think that the engine is still fine even if I did the break in with the LSN and HSN not at factory settings? I still have good compression and have only ran about 12 tanks through it.

Any help or advice would be appreciated regarding this.

Sounds fine, those engines are pretty tough. I tuned mine in yesterday after work and she is running sweet. It took 1 tank to tune her properly then I just filled her up and played around for another two tanks. I love nitro! I found that when you are almost finished running your truck, richen her up abit and run her around a bit rich so that the engine can cool and get lots of lube through before you shut her off.

Thanks for the info guys, I spent the later part of Friday, retuning the truck. WOW what a difference it makes when you get the tuning right, Though I did have my first break just when I finished tuning it, I was test running with no lid and when it rolled it snapped half of the top fin off the cooling head. Oh well I wanted to get a different one anyway. I guess that will be sooner than I expected.
