I've been learning a fair bit about my new T-Maxx 2.5 since I got into nitro RC a couple of weeks ago. I was in the local hobby shop for fuel today and there was a Savage with an Ofna .26 in the consignment section.

The engine came loose and stripped the spur gear. The kid that owned it had removed the spur gear nut, but couldn't get the gear off (didn't remove the engine or tranny). He gave up and put it up for sale.

I got the Savage, radio, Roto start (even though the engine has a pull start), and a Dynamite Mega 1 charger for $125.

The guy at the store even replaced the bad glow plug and started the engine. It looks brand new! There are several upgraded parts too. I need to figure out how to identify what base model it is so I can get a spur gear now.

I love a great deal!

I would have to say you got a kick ass deal there. Good job. I feel sorry for the kid for having so little patience but his loss your gain.

Thanks!

What's the best way to ID the chassis so I can see what spur gear I need. I have no idea what tranny I have!

There is two basic types of spur gears for the Savage. Single slipper and double. If you have a singlr slipper pad on the gear then you need the X style and if you have a sigle pad on the gearbox side then you need the 25 style.

OK. Sorry for the lack'o'knowledge, but I don't fully understand the slipper clutch thing.

There is one clutch plate. It is on the tranny side of the spur gear between the gear and the cast aluminum 'wheel' that is up against the transmission. Is that enough info to ID my setup?

Thanks in advance!!!

You have a Savage 21 or 25 more than likely. It does not matter though. Upgrade to the Savage X parts as soon as the current ones wear out. Much tougher.

Sweet.... E-baying X parts now.

Anyone know how many teeth I need on the spur gear? I see the X is 52 teeth...

I suppose I could count the 'nubs' left on mine....

What else do I need. Just the spur gear kit, or other parts too?????

Thanks!!!!

Nice - you got a sweet deal there!
There is no one answer to how many teeth you need to have on your spur gear.
The answer lies in what do you want your Savage to do.

You're not limited to replacing a 52t spur gear with another 52. You get to play around, and since you already have an upgraded engine, you have a larger selection of ratios to mess around with. BTW - How many teeth are on your clutchbell?

Do you want a wheely king? Then something like a 14/52 ratio would fit that bill.
14 being the number of teeth on the clutchball and 52 being the number of teeth on the spur gear.
Do you want more top end? then something like a 17/48 may be more in line with what you're looking for?

There are also physical limitations - for example, the width of the chassis plate/motor mount prevents something like a 20/52 combination from working. Just can't shoehorn it in.
Also when you get into really tall ratios like a 22/46 combo, you'll find that you're bogging it down off the line, wearing out your clutch shoes etc.

The engine he has is weak, no more than 16/49 gearing should be used. the engine won't respond well to anything lower. 15/49 is ideal for it. You buy a good .28 you can go up to 17/47. The lower you go on the gearing, the faster the clutch wears.
The first upgrades you need to look at are the complete differentials with housings, skid plates, bumpers and all the brackets. Get the TVP's and engine mount plate and braces too. The XL parts are not a direct swap.
The X style diffs and gearbox housings are stronger and MUCH easier to access for maintenance. You can pull the diff without removing the entire front or rear end. Also the Tranny case and radio box are a big improvement.
Run what you have until it tears up, in the meantime buy the X stuff and replace as needed.

The gears are 14/52 right now. I'll get 15/49 and 14/52 replacements so I can try both ways.

Thanks for the advice!

You gotta love these guys they always have tons of info. (tgl and scrogg)

Your welcome and thanks for the compliment. I spent many, many years with the Savage trucks. No sense in not sharing what I learned. Don't bother with the 52T spurs except with the 14T CB's. They are big and push the engine farther off center than necessary. Don't run a metal spur with the stock Savage CBs. They'll chew up the CB. Don't bother with a steel spur period actually, no need for it. It's heavy, which sucks power.47 and 49 T spurs are all you need with a 15, 16 & 17T CB. I think the 52T is necessary for the 14T CB to keep the engine off the fuel tank and brake rotors.
First thing to do with that truck is inspect the diffs, diff bearings fail easy on the savage. The bearing is a bad design @ 10x16x5mm. 2-3 gallons is their life span. They should have used 8x16x5 bearings like the rest of the 1/8th scale world.

They upgraded the housing on the X for easy access, that's it. It's the diff cup and rimg gear bearing seat that is the problem that are the problem. It is 10mm diameter causing the bearing to be thinner. You misunderstood me, they never corrected the issue on the current models. I think you could put some Ofna Jammin diffs in it no problem. The dogbone size would be the only issue.
They just released a bulletproof diff for the Savage series. AND they did fix the iisue. Bout time!

Looks like a killer kit. I'm just a backyard basher so far, but there are a whole lot of upgrade bits on my Christmas list!!!!

You'll know I'm a noob though... The first mod is a clear body I can paint and graphic as a Harley truck...

Gotta show my colors!!!!
