Heres one I just finished, this is one I have wanted to do for a loooong time for my personal Nascar lid collection for my RS4 3. I have also done Dales Goodwrench car, the blue and yellow Wrangler car, and now the Bass Pro shops car. Trying to decide which one of Dales special paint schemes I am gonna do next, Taz, Wheaties, Peter Maxx? I don't know just yet. For the best pic, click the pic, they look a bit distorted with the sites auto sizer.

Wow, awesome work there!

I presume some liquid mask was used for the trim lines or was that painted freehand before the next coat applied or what?

What do you use for your custom decals (and are they under the lexan or on top?)?

I use Sure Thing's Decal Maker to print water based adhesive decals (like on a plastic model kit) and they work pretty well...

Thanks Mark. You are correct on the liquid mask for the stripes. The decals are from multiple sources. I used an old Dale Jarret slixx set I had for the contingency decals, and just matched them up to the real car. The numbers, and goodwrench vinyl was a huge fiasco. I had a former member here make them for me, he did a terrible job. I had to use two sets, and some blank vinyl, and a few hours of hand trimming with an exacto to get anything useable. The hood logo I got at a Bass Pro Shops store, and the 50th anniversary decal I got in 1998 at a race track and had it since then. Its al vinyl applied to the outside just like the real NASCARs. I would love to get my own vinyl plotter eventually.

do you use like Revell model kits for the decals?

No, model kits are typically 1:24 scale waterslide decals, these are 1:10 scale vinyl.

The body color is actually ultra fine gold glitter suspended in parma faskoat, but mixed about three times heavier than the suggested amount, it was a pain in the ass to lay down. I put it in my Iwata brush, which proceded to clog up tighter than a clams ass the second I hit the trigger, which was followed by two hours of cleaning. Then I used a cheap wall mart $20 brush which is an external mix brush, and it clogged continually as well. Once that nightmare was over I backed that with Parma fasgold.

That's a sick paint job. I can see why you were made painter of the year. And how tight is a clams ass?

Absolutely breath taking Joe! That is absolutely beautiful. That is one of my favorite speacial paint schemes Earnhardt ever ran. That lid brings back alot of memories from not that long ago.... when a man named Earnhardt and a black number 3 dominated the track. The Wrangler number 3 I think is my absolute favorite, but the Bass Pro is definitely in my top 5 special schemes. Not to many people know this... but the Peter Max car was the very first special paint scheme that started it all. Great job Joe! Personally I would paint the Wheaties next! Earnhardt is currently on the Wheaties Box... pretty sweet.

Tom, actually the Silver goodwrench car from 1995 was the one that started all the special paint schemes. The Peter Max paint was much later.

Was it really.... wow, a piece of Earnhardt history I screwed up... doesn't happen often! LOL I stand corrected. Didnt Peter Max paint the silver one too? Maybe that is where I am getting mixed up. I know Earnhardt started the paint scheme deal.... just messed up the car! I have to get a lid for my TC4 to you to paint! Maybe the hpi corvette... painted up to look like the Rolex 24 at Daytona?

Tom

I have thought about doing that one too, I think that would be a sweet paintjob, I love the looks of that vette.

I'm not sure who designed the 95 silver scheme, but Earnhardt is definately the one who started all the special scheme paint jobs with that5 scheme. So maybe I should do that one next, since it is the one that started it all.

As said above that is very nice.I to am a huge Sr fan and loved the plain old Goodwrench Car, Kinda simple but mean looking. Very nice job though.
