hey all, i went through two glow plugs yesterday with my s-xl luckily i bought two more before my third went out today. and yes the two i bought today are also fouled out. i do not understand at all.. truck will be running alright then just go dead. i try to start it and get no where till i check the brand new plug and yep out. I'm running a stock savage xl, probably poorly tuned, #8 plugs but dont kno the brand off the top of my head. any input is greatly appreciated. p.s. here is a link to my bashing today, not that great cause the truck was running like garbage because i just can't get it tuned right any advice on tuning would be appreciated as well. thanks all.

#8 plugs? If they are O.S. plugs thaty's why. They suck. Buy some O'Donnell's purple sport glow plugs for it. They last forever and are usually 5 bucks and some change per plug.
If those are not available to you, the McCoy #8 plugs would be good. The #59 will work too.
What fuel do you use?
OK I just listened pretty closely to to your engine. It sounds like you need to lean the LSN a little. It sounds like it wants to die at idle in the first half.
Other thing it could be is a worn connecting rod bushing. You'll have to pull the engine backplate off to inspect it. Try the plugs I mentioned first.

After watching that vid I'd say its more like you murdering that XL......

thanks for the input scrogg. yeah just checked i been useing #8 O.S. plugs. I'm useing trinity monster 20%. is this the o'donnell plug i need? ODOG0200. i also really need to get this engine tuned right its really bothering me how crappy it runs.

Re: reply

nice fricken bashing i like it. on you tuning if you dont have a temp gun get one and start from factory settings i have had to do it a few times keep it up

You look like you are way lean try to fatten her up a half turn or even a whole turn. Make that engine smoke. What do your plugs look like when they are changed??Like Scrogg said lean the LSN and fatten the HSN. Also in my LOSI LST2 427 I run the McCoy 59"s they are some good pkugs they will go through hell.

Try both of these and see which works better for you.

Twocane, I used to use McCoy plugs as well. The O'Donnell's are way better. I have yet to blow one out. And for the price, there is no comparison. The Red plug is the equivalent to the MC-59.
Mikey, lean the bottom end, lower the idle screw adj, and richen the HSN.
You want it to just start shifting with the HSN set right, then you get your accelration from the LSN.
Make small changes and run it for a minute or two before making another change.

thanks for the input guys. going to call my LHS tmrw see if he carries those plugs. if not i wont feel bad buying offline because the guy who owns the place has been pissing me off. lean the low, richen the high, and richen the idle screw seems easy enough. p.s. that bashing was alright. it was funny when the wheel came off lol. believe me it will get better.

p.s. when i look at the plug when i take it out usually the element coil thing is a dark color and warped a little.

If that is what the plug looks like it's lean on top end, but also those OS #8's are brittle.
Just change plugs and lean the LSN and see how it does. The HSN setting varies from day to day more so than the LSN.

I'm useing trinity monster 20%. is this the o'donnell plug i need? ODOG0200.

I also run the Trinity Monster Horsepower in my LST2(Dynamite 427) w/a McCoy #8 plug and it runs great ! I also just bought 2 O'Donnell Big Block MT(ODOG0200, so yes) glow plugs, but haven't had a chance to run them yet. Those were the plugs that I was told to get from my LHS.....I too was gonna get the Purple Sport(ODOG0302) and was told to run the Big Block MT plugs w/the Trinity 20%, unless you run a 'Sport' fuel, not to run a 'Sport' plug.

Try the McCoy #8's, I guarantee you'll like 'em better;).......I do !:D

Dude, it's a Savage!:second_place: or :third_place: That's why they are the king of bashers!

Yeah, right next to the LST2:first_place: !;):D

Try both of these and see which works better for you.

The Red plug is the equivalent to the MC-59.

No & No & No it's not, it's quivalent to a McCoy #55.......the Big Block MT is equivalent to a McCoy #59.:D DO NOT use 'SPORT' plugs unless using 'SPORT' fuel.;)

Taz, thanks for correcting me on my mistake. I had to double check O'Donnell's site on that.
Bottom line, the purple sport plug works perfectly in every BB engine I have put it in. I run nothing but Race fuel. Sport fuel/ Sport plugs..... They just call the plugs "Sport" instead of "Our cheapest version".
I have used the red plug in a 3.3 that I wore the bearings out in it. it was killing every plug i put in it, Traxxas or McCoy... I put the Red O'Donnell in it and the sloppy engine could not blow the plug. The elements in their plugs are super strong. The engine of course still ran like crap with the rod bouncing around but I was trying to blow it up. I wanted an excuse to buy the 21 TM.

that is what one of the busted plugs look like. and how does my piston look?

you know I'm really surprised how good the piston and sleeve look considering that the engine got to 390degress. i have my pins factory set now. just have to pick up the sparkplugs that were suggested.. then you guys will see some real footage.

Mikey just a few words of advice. When you bash a Savage that hard you better check the diff outdrive bearings for play every 2 gallons. If not you'll be buying new ring and pinion gears.
Have fun bud!

funny you say that scrogg. if thats the bearing that is right behind the flywheel, i noticed that it was coming out a little. i just pushed it flush again. I've taken trucks apart and I'm not really bashful about it but... i never took apart a pinion and flywheel. I'm afraid i wont get the clutch back together.

I am talking about the differential bearings in the front and rear ends of the truck. They are 10X16X5 mm bearings located on your diff cup and ring gear.
The bearing behind your flywheel is the engine front bearing.....I hope like hell it did not come loose! It should not be able to move, it's pressed in. It takes a lot of heat and elbow grease to remove and install those.
As far as the clutch goes....it's a learned art. I can assemble a clutch with my eyes closed in about a minute. My first few times however were a PITA though. Clutch springs flying across the room, me bleeding from jabbing myself with a screwdriver....It was ugly and involved a lot of foul language! Just look at the manual and assemble it like they say to.
