Glow plug differences question

Okay - I've been soing this awhile - and cannot figure out the benifits of a cold plug vs a hot plug. most of what i read relates to outside temp. but i run in Florida year round, where it is always 120 degrees on the track surface. sometimes i have a hard time keeping my engines running at idle, so i wondering if this has anythign to do with it. I currently use A3 plugs in all my engines. Ideas? Can anyone give me a better indication as to the pros and cons of the OS A3, #5, and A8 plugs?

The colder the plug the later it will fire. In affect it changes the timing. It will affect your power-band. I tried using a cold plug to reduce the heat at one point before I learned how to properly tune. The result was poor or shall I say worse performance.

There is no substitute for proper tuning.

You may want to try 30% fuel to keep the heat down until you figure out your tuning issues.

thanks eddy - i dont think its me as much as the engines i have been using regarding tuning. i have them tuned quite well, so what u are saying is that if i switch from an a3 plug to an a8, i will notice an improvment in power, but also an increase in engine temp? how drastic of a change are we talking about with these two?

The plug wont make a big difference in the engine temps. Its all in how you tune it with that plug. If you are having issues with heat change to 30% fuel and see an immediate drop in temps. You will get 10-30 degrees cooler. Again if the engine isn't tuned properly you may not see any difference.

I ran last week in 105 degrees and had no issues with overheating. Hyper 8 port and a Traxxas 2.5.

Are you constantly overheating or is it a spiking issue?

Dont forget, when you run hot plugs, you inherintly advance the timing. Thus, run a leaner mixture. In this case, you may/will have to richen it slightly to keep temps down. But, I prefer advanced timing for performance. Granted, engine wear comes sooner.

Eddy - the overheating is not a major problem - just on my OPS mill. it runs consistantly at 275-280. but other OPS owners say their mills do the same thing. i was just wondering the diff in plug temps, and what exactly it does.

I will be breaking in my new OS CV-R this weekend - should i be running an A8 in it?

A-8 and Mc-59 are great all around plugs.
