This sunday is my birthday and I'm gettin an electric guitar to accompany my black Fender acoustic guitar. I can't wait. I'm probly gonna get a Fender lol. Anyone else here play guitar? I started playing a few weeks ago but my friend who is teaching me has been playing for about a year and a half

Congrats! I got an acoustic guitar for Christmas like 5 or 6 years ago and practiced for several months without any real improvement, all I can play is the M*A*S*H theme song and the beginning of brain stew, thats it lol.

I've been piddling with it for years. I currently have a Fender Strat, and a Washburn acoustic. I almost never play anymore, and when I do, it's almost always acoustic stuff. I've been considering selling off my electric setup, since I would rather see somebody get the use out of it. Kind of hard to rock out in an apartment with a 2X12 120 watt combo setup. :hehe:

I've played on and off for 20 years. Less the last few years, because to keep my chops up and to be able to play the way I like, it takes too much time away from the rest of life.:) Learn the basic barred power chord, and get comfortable moving up and down the neck and across the 3 big strings. It sounds good as soon as you play it right. Just put your index finger on any fret of the biggest string. Then put your ring finger on the next string up, 2 frets down. For example, 6th string, 5th fret/5th string, 7th fret. Only hit the 2 strings your fretting. It works anywhere on the neck. This basic chord is good to learn first, as it will keep your interest perked when other, more complicated chords frustrate you. You can always take a break from what your trying to learn and bang out some power chords to keep it fun.

Am I feeling some Smoke On the Water in there? :hehe:

Playing the guitar is EASY! Press the strings...and strum!

OK well in THEORY it's easy. hahaha I can never execute worth a damn! Power Chords are fun to play. I always have trouble with some of the chords though. My fingers don't want to cooperate, even in slow motion.

I think I was rocking "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" last time I played. LMAO

Yea guitar isn't that hard, at least for me it's pretty easy. My friend said I was picking it up really fast. The first night he taught me dueling banjos and I started playing it using ultimate picking and my friend is like "holy crap how do you know how to use ultimate picking?!" I'm just like I don't know lol. Then I taught myself how to play this song Lilium from the anime series Elfen Lied. That was after my friend taught me how to read tabs though. It really killed my fingers cuz I didn't have callouses.

What does a Fender Strat go for? I was thinking of getting one

You mean "alternate picking"? Strats range in price from cheap to really expensive...depends on which model you want. I had a Made in Mexico version that I sold for $325 @ 2 years ago. Great guitar. I heard the Squire Strat (new for 2010) is a kick butt guitar these days. It's not the same as the entry level one they had a few years ago I guess. I dunno....I hear people raving about them.

I'm more of a Les Paul fan....I rock a Jay Turser Les Paul Clone, and I have an Alvarez Acoustic.

I've played for years, but I'm never going to get really good at it. I use it as a way to release stress when the weather's to crappy to go RC'ing. Have a Washburn AE20 shallow body accustic which has really developed a great sound over the years(+10). My electric is a Ibanez SA 260 FM, for the money it's a great guitar, would highly recommend it. Would even dare say it's more versatile than a Strat, since the bridge pickup can be switched between single coil and humbucker mode.

I used to have a Epiphone Les paul, again a great guitar for the money, just too damn heavy and I never got used to the fat neck they have.

I usually rock out some Satriani tunes and some AC/DC when I feel like actually making it through a whole song. :hehe:

The first guitar I had was a Squire Strat. Not a great guitar, but OK to start out on. It would go out of tune if you looked at the whammy.

Yea yea, alternate ultimate, same thing. They both end in "ate" so...yea! :P

I've been playing for 11 years. Through that period of time I have bought four guitars. The first was a cheap one, best to buy a generic one first in case one decides it's not for them. I bought an old westone strat copy which was cool, it played real nice. Afterwhile I ended up with two fender strats as well. I think for a good round sound overall, fenders are ideal.. mostly because that is what a lot of bands used waay back when. They kind of set the standard sound in rock n roll. I did buy an ibanez bass guitar at one point for 50 bucks, which played real nice for a 50 dollar insturment. I also paired it up with an ampeg rig. I can't remember the model head I have, but I do use the 4X10 classic cab on top, and a fender 15" on the bottom. It sounds phenomenal. I do rememeber that the head is the solid state equivalent of the old ampeg SVT's. For the guitars I have several amps. One is a junky little kramer, a good practice amp. I have two Marshall MG100 series heads, a Marshall Lead Mossfet 100 head, and two 4x10 slant cabs, one 4x10 straight cab, a Peavey 4x12 cab, oh and a Marshall JCM series 2x12 cab. You gotta love the pawnshop deals! I'm actually In a band now, but we havent recorded anything as of yet. As soon as we do, I'm sure I will post a link for it.

I used to play but then quit. Not sure why, guess I got bored of it. That's when I listened death metal and had had long hair. I'm not bada** enough anymore, I think I am going to play acoustic sometime soon to get back into music.

Bought several.
A used and abused Fender.
A cheap Martin that wouldn't stay in tune and had some serious fret buzz. That one sounded good as long as ya had plenty of distort.

Got a Peavey right now. Sounds good as hell clean. Humbuckers on it.
Everything I own is Peavey.
Guitar going through a practice amp, going through a 7 channel mixing board.
Sorta got a studio set up. Amp has got distort, but no reverb. Got reverb on the board. Can get about any sound I want to. Just have to adjust one of them.

I still can't play. Used to do some leads. Jessica, Black Magic Woman, Sabbath..
The power chords. After Smoke on the water, try "No Quarter" by Rush. That's fun to play.

Found a decent site the other day. http://www.guitar-tube.com/
Activeguitar.com used to have some tab. Not been able to get much there lately though.
Do you have any?

Good luck. Hope ya enjoy your new toy.

My friend told me about this awesome site with guitar tabs. They are all user uploaded and user rated so they are pretty good tabs. The website is called ultimate-guitar.com

I was a member of www.jamplay.com for like 6 months or so, and those instructors are really very good. They also have video lessons on popular songs...they quite literally walk you through playing cool tune.

I downloaded quite a bit of videos before I canceled my membership. lol

This web site is pretty awesome as well: http://www.justinguitar.com/ for learning.

I've been playing for about 30 years. Pretty much self-taught and play by ear. Spent most of my college career in and out of bands. Was the most fun I ever had. I set them down after I got married and had my daughters. Well now my oldest is 14 and she wants to play. So I bought her an electric for Christmas and she's been motivating me to start playing again. Feels pretty good. And the cool thing is that we both like the same kind of music. So I'm helping her with some easy GreenDay and things like that.
And for the record, I'm playing a Charvel 475 Deluxe, which they stopped making like 15 years ago and I bought in 1991. And an Ovation Celebrity electric/acoustic. Not a bad guitar. But with the composite round body the acoustic sound isn't all that great. But it sounds fantastic through an amp.

Very nice Candyman. I wish I could figure out what my problems are....Chords are not friendly to me. lol Teaching yourself when your 35 isn't easy either!
