what do you want? do you want top end? all acceleration?
there are two gears in the revo transmission. with the options you speak of, you can tweak there relationship to each other, or ratio.
standard... is standard. i don't know how else to describe it, as i don't have any exact tooth counts. if you're happy with the way your truck accelerates and tops out, then you're good to go. if you want something more... ie it's sluggish off the line or a wheelie king, you have some options. really, you should adjust the spur / clutchbell combo first, but the transmission is a good place to look at too, if you know what you want out of your rig.
close ratio makes accelerating equivalent to a wet dream. it pops off the line and shifts into second within a second. the top end is decreased significantly. this is best for very close/short tracks if you're racing, or if you have a weak engine, and you want the most punch out of it.
wide ratio spreads out first and second. it relies on the torque of the engine more to accelerate, than its gear ratio. once in second gear, there is really a long way to go before topping your engine, as it is a much taller second gear. if you're a top speed fanatic, and/or you have a power house of an engine, this is the way to go (especially if keeping the front end on the ground is problematic)
hopefully that helps. it's not exact or anything, but that's the gist of it. when i had the 2.5R in my revo, i used the close ratio gears and it was a treat. with the brushless system, i have the transmission locked into second gear (close ratio), and removed the shifter to lose a
lot or rotating mass. i haven't driven it yet, but i believe that to be the best option. it really comes down to what you plan to be doing, and how you want to match your driving style.
cheers.
