gear mesh

I think there is some confusion as that what information you are requesting.

What R/C model do you have? Are you wanting to know what distance should be between the clutch bell and spur gear? If so, use a receipt from a store and roll it between the gears, then tighten your engine mounts. When you roll the paper out the gears should mesh nicely without ratcheting.

Is this what you are looking for?

Re: reply

ok to start all over I have a savage xl 5.9. i recently strippied the teeth off of the spur gear and the clutch bell. going to get new ones did know if i should go with stock size teeth or do something diff to get better performance. Sorry for all the confusion :\

If you want more low-end, get a smaller cb. More top-end, bigger clutch bell. Not sure how far you can go either way. The Savage owners can help you there.

By better performance do you mean higher top end or wheely's that last forever?
RC vehicles these days have a lot of flexibility as to modifications - so you get to play around.
For starters, how many teeth are on:
A. Your spur gear
B. Your clutch bell

I'm not familiar with the stock XL (if that is what you have), so I really don't know it's engines power band or its limits.
Looking at the manual online it appears that the stock XL comes with a 16/52 combo.
So it's wheely's you're looking for, drop down to a 13T or 14T CB.

If it's top end, try a smaller spur gear - like a 47T or a 49T.
It'll go faster than one equipped with 52T.
HPI sells a 20T CB (I've even seen 22T CB's for sale) and HPI's says that a 20/47 combo will fit. However I seem to recall that other owners have indicated that the 5.9 engine doesn't have the power to handle that.
I'll let others weigh in on this combo except to say that even if it could - for general bashing you would be eating clutch shoes.

You may be realizing by now that certain terms have specific meaning.
As gnarkill stated, mesh is specific to the amount of slop (or tightness) between gears - in this case the clutch bell (CB) and spur gear.
Like Goldielocks and the three bears, there's too much, too little, or just right.
If it ain't right, you'll have problems...

One more question - In going to HPI's website it looks like the stock spur gear is a 52T machined steel spur gear - you stripped that?
Better check your clutch bell too then...
Also, if you have a machined steel spur gear, you'll need hardened clutch bells or you'll end up hosing them.

Correction - forget what I said about a 16/47 combo - it won't fit - can't get the proper mesh.
HPI says that for a:
52T spur gear you can work with (fit in) 13T to 16T CB's.
49T spur gear you can work with (fit in) 15T to 20T CB's.
47T spur gear you can work with (fit in) 17T to 20T CB's.
