Savage 4.6 not shifting into second gear. So I toke apart the gear box, it was covered in grease, is this grease necessary?the pawl was covered in grease and not loose enough to engage second.what’s best to clean and what grease or lub is best.

I don't have a Savage ,but I run the Mgt's ,tranny's are the same concept , I run a greaseless trans.
because grease will destroy an fry the one way bearing ,if any grease is used it should only be lightly
on the gear an a very sticky grease is used!..👍😎
