OK I just bought a used Futaba T3pm transmitter and receiver from what I understand this is synthesized system. So if I bought the correct receiver I could change my frequency on the tranmitter and receiver and do away with chips is this correct.

If you bought the correct receiver yes. A Futaba R303FHS Synthesized 3-Channel Receiver 75MHz is the right one. It is part of the 3PM-FS system. It has two pots on it to select your frequency. Then you enter the same frequency into your transmitter. Sync 'em up and your set.

If you got a Futaba R153F 3-Channel FM 75MHz receiver those require crystals as it is part of the regular FM series.

Then there is the new FASST system...
