Yeah, that's what I figure, but if it's gonna be like this all the time, then there's no point in trying to get into rcnt since you'll never get in. I've only been able to get in like 5 times in the last three hours. and 90% of the time, I get the too many people on server msg. And this's way late in the day on a weekend where no one posts.

can't wait to see it on a week day in the middle of the day.

Why the server messages?
=============================

For something I just placed into effect only hours ago I sure have received a lot of PM's, I'm's, emails, and yes even a phone call. None the less there is a reason for placing such a limit on users.

1. Bandwidth

A little history and info about RCNT - Right now RCNT gains anywhere from 250-300members a month, and thats AFTER I delete all the accounts each month that have not activated their account within 10days. For the last 2-3months RCNT has been hosted on the largest hosting package my host provides. The beginning of January I was able to obtain a special from the host which would increase our package to another 30GB of bandwidth and 1GB storage giving RCNT a grand total of 50GB bandwidth and 3GB storage. This package deal went into effect on January, at the end of last month RCNT used a total of 47.64GB of bandwidth, Now what?

The host has already hinted at a dedicated server just for RCNT, many members have too due to the fact the site is slowing down because of everyone on the site, there lays a problem with this wonderful solution. Dedicated servers run about $180 a month, plus a setup fee which usually runs about $200-300. These to totals are more money then what RCNT has received in both donations and advertising combined (so much for my great big money scheme huh?)

This gives me a few options: 1. Close RCNT (yeah like that's going to happen) 2. Find a way to reduce bandwidth until I personally can afford to move to a dedicated server. Choice two is what I choose, and thus the reason for a limit of how many users can browse the site at a given time. Right now the limit is set at 65 users.

I would like to point out one thing, this is ONLY a test. A test to see if limiting users will reduce the bandwidth at all, I should know if it does within only about 3-4 days. On average RCNT uses 1.6 to 1.8GB of bandwidth each day, so if that number decreases I know I'm doing something right, well at least until I can afford more. If it doesn't work, well then I have no clue as to what to do, though one mention of disabling the gallery has been brought up.

That's the story behind it, nothing that exciting.

Actually believe it or not you'd have a better chance in the middle of the day. Our busiest times are from Sunday thur Tuesday from 7pm-1am

Yup, that's what I figured

Hey, what if you set the forum so you could have only registered users surf the forum.

And for the unregistered, maybe just have the General Nitro Forum (is that what it's called) just for them.

I'll bet that'd cut the bandwidth a lot

Unfortunately there is no way of limiting people to just one forum, and if that was the case there would be nothing to stop unregistered users from just registering an account to be able to view all of the forum.

-Michael

well it'll discourage those who never register to not come. since they're not gonna post anyways, it's no loss.

goto teamintrinsic.com...they have it so you can only look at one forum before having to register for everything

Kwong your totally missing the point here - this has nothing to do with registered vs. guests. It's got everything to do with bandwidth, members use just the same amount of bandwidth as guests do. As I've already said I've got two options, 1. Keep RCNT up as a limited resource, or 2. Shut it down - which do you think I'm going to do?

-Michael

no YOU'RE missing the point. Think about it, right now the registered and unregistered users use the same bandwidth. Cuz they can both look at the same threads and there's only subtle difference between the two.

If about the only thing you can do is see the frontpage, then are you really gonna stick around all that long? I can tell you i've been on websites where you have to register to do anything, and I end up just leaving since it's not worth it to register.

Ok Kwong sounds to me that you'd rather everyone just leave.

Ah, now you're making me seem like an butthead...lol

No, my point is that's a way to get the bandwidth down.

Ohh I got that point, but at the same time - making everyone leave. :/

-Michael

I had heard criticism of another site because they demanded that users register just to view the posts. I think I actually registered there.

Perhaps their whole motive for making everyone register even just to read was for bandwidth purposes.

WoodiE I find it sad this is happening. I for one contribute when I can on a regular bassis, more should do the same. I am calling out EVERYONE on this whether you contributed one time or not. I feel like I have a leg to stand on here. I contribute money, my time, free stuff for giveaways, along with supporting every lottery. Everyone has 5$ the can donate whether they pony up or not that's up to them. You enjoy the site, you learn from the site, and with this knowledge you save yourself time and money. You guys make me upset that you cannot give a little money when we obviously all have some money or we would not own an RC. Not goona go off to much but you people who enjoy the site and do not give make me sick, you are the kind of people that go through life just using and comsuming without any thought to who did the hard work to make what you use. And it really torques my chain that when I cannot get on because you USERS that mooch are on when I contribute!
