Last night I retired my embattled iPhone 3G. It was cool when I got the thing two years ago and when I consider what it has been through since, well it's still pretty remarkable. Let's see, there was the bonfire incident and then there was the mystery drop that was hard enough to crack the outer shell. It just kept on trucking, albeit it at seriously reduced speeds. I suffered through the declining performance (since July of last year) and we finally cast aside the AT&T contractual yoke mid-January.

Well, I now have in my possession a new, old-tech, phone. I went to Verizon and picked up one of the remaining few Droid X's. I know this unit has been officially retired and I know that there are better phones right around the corner (HTC Thunderbolt), but the Droid X is still pretty fantastic. I simply love the Android OS and how it so easily integrates with gmail. I'm still getting deAppled, I had no idea how assimilated I'd become.

So what kind of phones are people using here? Any other crackphone, err sorry, smartphone users out there? After using the iPhone, there was just no way I could go back to a "regular" phone.

I have had the droid x since the day it came out and I'm still loving it! As much as I want to upgrade to the new iPhone 4 for verizon, my droid x is still the best phone I've ever had! I use it everyday, and I'm still finding new things about it to this day!

After living in Jobsian chains for the last two years, the Android OS is just a little overwhelming. I'm so used to having everything "just work", that the freedom to choose is a little intimidating. That's not to say I don't like my dX, rather I'm enjoying getting used to it.

note: EA released Tetris for Android. Whew, that was the one app I really needed. :D

I've got a HTC Hero. Other than being a bit slow changing apps or loading an app, I really like it. When I upgrade, I'll get another Android.

Sony Ericsson x10 Mini Pro here. And even though I'm pretty hardcore Mac fanboy I still love this phone. I love that it's compact and doesn't feel like a brick in the pocket. Sony Ericsson makes a nice bit of software for Mac boys so you can sync with your iTunes library with ease.

I haven't been this happy with a phone for a few years.

I love my Droid X. I got it in January of this year....after wanting an iPhone for as long as they have been out. I finally decided to try Android and I love it. This thing is so damn handy to carry around I shoot videos and snap pics all the time now. lol It does everything I want and more...and the best part is I can download 95% of the apps I want to run for FREE.

My iPhone integrates with my gmail, and all other Google services just fine, you must have gotten a dud. :p: It is an iPhone 4 though. I like some of the droid phones, and I'm glad that Android is around to give both Apple and MS competition and keep them on their toes.

Gmail worked just fine on the iPhone, which has great features. I just outgrew it, that's all.

The Android OS is pretty daunting. It's beyond full-featured, infinitely customizable (or so it seems.) I don't look for Apple to make any radical changes, they've got their stuff dialed so well. It really does "just work". That wasn't any kind of insult when I said it earlier. What really surprises me is Microsoft. They've never marketed a very good mobile OS. Google and Apple are killing 'em.

Gmail did work just fine on the iPhone and it has great features. I just outgrew it, that's all. The Android OS is pretty daunting. Apple has their stuff dialed in so I don't look for them to make any radical changes. MS on the other hand has never had a very mobile OS, which is something that's always surprised me. I figure they should be all over the smartphone market.

MS has had windows mobile in the smart phone market since 2003 actually. I didn't find Android daunting personally, but I'm a self professed gadget junkie though, and not ashamed to admit it. :D Not to mention after living with WinMo for a full year, Android was like a breath of fresh air for me as much of a PITA as WinMo was. My new iphone made it almost 48 hours before being jailbroken, so I have the best of both worlds. I love my iPhone, but then again, I love my Android tablet also.

My first smart phone was the Samsung BlackJack 2, I think I got it in the end of '06. After that, I'm hooked to smart phones, now I have an iPhone 3Gs, and when the next gen (4G, 5?) comes out, I'll probably get that. I just can't use a regular phone again.

Droid X: Day 2: Subject: Battery Life (or lack thereof)

I've been playing with this thing nonstop since I got it. I feel confidant that's why it's sucking down juice like a pig. I'll try to back off a little bit today, see what happens. Regardless, I'm sure I'll end up acquiring one of those after-market 3500mAH expansion batteries. Yes, I know; it will make and already large phone even larger. I have no problem with that, I usually have a bag of some sort with me wherever I go.

Battery life is pretty good on the Droid, depending on how you use it. On a semi heavy normal usage day I can get @ 8-10 hours out of the stock battery. On a calm quiet day I can get maybe close to double that. On a day I play a lot of Angry Birds or watch YouTube videos and stuff....I might get 6-8 hours.

My first week...I barely made it through the work day on the battery ;-)

My Hero lives on the charger unless I'm out walking around. I usually get about 16 hours of standby time out of it with WiFi and Bluetooth enabled.

As a House Husband, I can leave my device on the charger as well. Once I start going out more with my daughter, then I think I'll really want that extra battery time.

Note - okay, so I admitted I'm a stay-at-home dad...

My Captivate is a droid and I'm loving it. The only thing I dont like about it compared to my Blackberry's is that you can't use it while its charging.

Ordered the 3500mAH battery off of eBay for $14.99. And it isn't even shipping from China.

You wanna know what's crazy to me? The camera tech in phones blows me away, my buddy's incredible has an 8MP camera, in a phone! I think mine is only 5 or so. I had to leave the office and go out in the field today. The location was up on one of the area peaks, looking out over the Smoky Mtn Range. I took a photo with my phone, edited it on my phone, and uploaded it to my flickr page with my phone. And the camera tech blows me away, my buddy's incredible has an 8MP camera, in a phone!

For you Android guys, I highly recommend photoshop express, and I'm pretty sure it's free as well.
