I know it has been brought up a few years back but I have some Q's that wernt their.

I have been a avid fishermen for years and a few days back I was looking at my rods are reels and their are old old old, anyway i was going to a local fishing gear store to look to see what they have and I was looking and i said to my self Fly Fishing is what i want to do now. i know it takes skill and practice and I am up for that i have wanted to flyfish for years. any way i went to look at rods and I did not get much help from the store workers Who sell rods and have limited knowled. Anyway i was talking a to a guy and he was a beginer Flyfishermen and he offerd me so help he is a beginner also so i am not sure how accurate his info is.

He said suggested a 9 ft.This one to be exact http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link.jsp;jsessionid=D1XILFM1YN24RTQSNOHCCOGOCJVZCIWE?id=0029947318574a&type=product&cmCat=froogle&cm_ven=froogle&cm_cat=data_feed&cm_ite=various&rid=7510101020603&_requestid=34359 and he also suggested medium action since I am beginning. i will be fishing for Steelhead and Salmon and he likes Cabela's rods and reels.
I dont know a single person who flyfishes and I really want to get in to it.

Thanks for any help

I have a few of their (redington) fly reels and they are pretty nice. I am sure they rods are just as nice, but I have never used them.

Hey Tarant, congrats on catching the bug. Redington does make some decent stuff, so don't be worried about quality. 9' is a great length for someone learning to fly cast. Reason is, on your forward and back casts, the fly will be quite aways from the ground and less likely to hang up on stuff...It's also long enough to whip the line out there easier than a 7 or 8' rod. I have a 7'6" rod I fish in tight streams with. Less room = shorter rod. I also have a couple 11' rods I use with my float tubes. when you're sitting in the water like that with an 11', the line is closer to the ground/water than standing and using a 7' rod. A longer rod (no puns please) also increases the effects of error. ie., if you cast a 9' rod 2-3" past perfect, you're gonna add another 2-3" to that with an 11' just because of the added length.

I would strongly suggest against buying off the internet unless you know exactly what you want. If you're looking for advice, professional help choosing...check out some of the smaller mom and pop tackle shops. Definately try as many rods as you can before you buy. Most of the small shops in my area are more than happy to spool up a few rods and take you out back to try 'em out. all 9' medium action rods are not alike. You will be amazed at the differences and it could mean the difference between fishing next year and thinking it sucks a**!!! :juggle:
