You would be wise to keep the RPMs and temps down for about 6 tanks (or a full quart). Just drive it slowly.

Gotcha. I must say though, waiting to go through a tank sucks.......I think the damn thing is more fuel efficient than my car!

It will burn more gas when you start to drive it. Keep it a bit rich and do the suggested turns to help break in the gears. You can give it some gas but avoid extended full throttle blasts and keep the temps and RPMs down. After about 3 tanks you can lean it a bit so that it will shift to second, but keep it on the rich side and keep the temps down in the 210-220 range. After about 6 tanks (a full quart) you should start to tune it for best performance and you can hammer it.

Got my savage up and running through its first tank of fuel. 3 more to go then I'm off to bash. woot.

teh end
Yay^^ You got it running without having to resort to fuel with less oil, so that's good. Congratulations!

I think I need 12% oil (I still get a puddle of oil where I do adjustments on the truck) I can't lean my Truckzilla engine any further without the engine dying when I hit the throttle. So far I haven't seen it hit second gear. Even my little brother said the truck is really slow...

It's funny you mention that. I have been working this thing all day pretty much. Got through 3 tanks of fuel, started to lean it out a bit, still bogging down when I try to throttle it and I have yet to see second gear as well. I thought there was some special setup I had to do.....doh!

I guess I just have to wait and see...

EDIT: For those that are/were wondering what my problem was.....When i reset the factory needle settings I really tweaked the low speed needle and had it waaaay to far in. After I got mad at it this morning I called HPI and asked them what the hell I was doing wrong. When I asked him about the Low Speed Needle he told me how to make sure it was correct, I did, and the rest is history. The second thing that was wrong was I didnt give this any patience........dumb me

You hit the key word for doing a proper break-in...."patience". It's hard to do sometimes. Glad to hear you got it running and everything is going smooth. You're really going to like it when she start flying and shifting on you.

Later....

Since I have heard this more than once and havent found an answer yet....is this thing going to shift gears when it is damn good and ready to or do I have to do something to set that up?

Normally, when it's been broken in and leaned out, it will shift normally when it reaches the correct RPMs. On very rare occasions, from what I've seen at the LHS, sometimes a trans will need to be changed from the factory setting. It doesn't happen often.

It should definitely shift when you start leaning it out. You will definitely be able to hear it. There may be a time when the tranny won't sound like it is shifting but it really is. You simply won't hear it. That's just b/c the engine's RPM and tranny shift point are dialed in and it simply doesn't make any noise. But since you are goind through break-in, you should definitely hear it shifting once the carb is opened up. If not, then lean out the HSN.

Let us know how it goes.
