I've been testing the temps of my gx21 engine using water, I've red that you should drop a bead of water onto the top of the glow plug and use the time it takes to boil off as a ruff guide.
i do this and the water takes a few seconds to boil away but if the water drops onto the base of the glow plug and cylinder head the water will boil away instantly. the engine is being run slightly rich i think and there is always a trial of smoke from the stinger.

which reading would be best to go by, is it running to hot?
 
the top of the cooling head, man the water just sits there, it dont boil, so it looks like time to lean and push a little more?
 
I would say so. Make sure you test it after a few minutes of run time as well as a HIGH SPEED lengthy run so it hits maximum temp.

Do you have anyone that can loan you a temp gun as well?
 
the engine is still being broken in should be done in the next few tanks then ill start to lean out. hopefully by the end of the week i should have a temp gun, strange though none of my LHS's have them?

ach ffs now the clutch spring has popped :( looks like shes down for a day or 2, man this inferno sports has spent more time off the fecking road, I'm begining to wish me never bought the dam thing :)

any reason for the clutch spring to brake or is it due to ware and tare, only put about 3/4 gallons through the dam thing.

Clutch springs can be regular maintenance no matter what the ride. I've seen them go after 2 tanks and after 2 gallons. When you put the next one on make sure you crimp the ends closed. Less chance of just popping off. Also, deburr the clutch if need be.

Sears is a big hardware store in the states. They have their temp guns on sale this week. Just figured if you had one you could pop in.

Instead of using that inacurate "water drop test", buy an infared temp gauge. They make one under the Duratraxx name that only costs about $25.00 from Tower. I just bought one and it works great. You will never be able to tell the correct temperature of the engine with the primative "water test".

Çh®i§tiªñ - deburring?

when i removed the 2 piece clutch, the edge the sits against the flywheel has developed an edge all the way round, looks like the clutch shoes are slightly sqooshed. is this what is removed when u are talking about deburring the clutch and is this a normal?
 
Sometimes when a manufacturer produces mass quantities of clutches, they do not trim them well. ANY extra clutch material needs to be trimmed off. Especially check the holes where the clutch mounts to the flywheel and the groove where the spring sits.
 
thx there is some blurring needed, only problem no is clutch springs, no 1 has any :( and probably none for another couple of weeks, going to try some elastic bands :D
 
THAT SUCKS!

If you are going to experiment, make sure wherever your order the clutch from you also order a clutchbell while you are at it. You just never know ;)
 
well good news is I've been able to trace a couple of springs down + also a a slightly harder version of the spring just to experiment with. should be here for monday.
