hey guys, is a new engine that much better than an engine rebuild with a new piston and collar?

It's not cost effective to rebuild an engine. Look on eBay for an engine, you'll probably find one for a decent price.

Strange but true.
You can usually find a new engine for less than the cost of the needed replacement parts to do a complete rebuild.

well alien13 said It's not cost effective to rebuild an engine. this IS true. how ever i rebuilt mine just to get the experience. but whats right for you is what you will have to work out.

If you're building a 3.3, more than likely your bearings are shot as well. By the time you factor in new bearings and a sleeve and piston you're not but around $30 - $40 away from the cost of an exchange motor from Traxxas. Not to mention, it takes a little effort to get bearings out of the block.

3.3 Piston and sleeve - 47.99 - 57.99

Engine bearings.... we'll say 30.00 for both

New engine.... about 135.

so you have 77.99 to 87.99 for a rebuild

or 135 for an engine.....

to me... i'd rather rebuild.....

Assume you start out with a well used Traxxas 3.3 engine - to rebuild right I would change the parts listed below
I went out to eBay and picked reasonable parts including Shipping & Handling.

Front and rear Bearings - 22.72
http://cgi.ebay.com/Integy-Aluminum...Control_Parts_Accessories&hash=item483ae6aada

OWB - 15.99
http://cgi.ebay.com/5309-Traxxas-Ni...Control_Parts_Accessories&hash=item5ad948f2cd

Crankshaft - 8.48 - 12.95
http://cgi.ebay.com/REVO-TMAXX-JATO...Control_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2eadb5c0d1
http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-2-4GHZ-REVO...Control_Parts_Accessories&hash=item19bc88d456

Piston/Sleeve - 53.84
http://cgi.ebay.com/Traxxas-Piston-...Control_Parts_Accessories&hash=item335e246ff9

Carb rebuild kit - O-ring set - 5.44
http://cgi.ebay.com/Traxxas-TRA5247...pt=Radio_Control_Vehicles&hash=item3efb6e6e0d

Head shim - 5292 - 5.76
http://cgi.ebay.com/Traxxas-5292-Ga...Control_Parts_Accessories&hash=item518dca6834

Exhaust O-ring - 2.75
http://cgi.ebay.com/Traxxas-5256-He...pt=Radio_Control_Vehicles&hash=item19bd34f873

Backplate o-ring - 3.89
http://cgi.ebay.com/Traxxas-5213-O-...Control_Parts_Accessories&hash=item519028f6fd

22.72 + 15.99 + 8.48 + 53.84 + 5.44 + 5.76 + 2.75 + 3.89 = 118.87

Buy new engine off eBay - 98.90
http://cgi.ebay.com/TRAXXAS-T-MAXX-...Control_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2eada7042c

Add OWB - 15.99

Total 114.89

Sell used engine on eBay - 30.00 - 60.00 (range of completed / sold listings)
http://cgi.ebay.com/Traxxas-3-3-Eng...Control_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3a5b57e5ec

115.00 - 30.00 = 85.00 out of pocket
Even if you keep the old engine - at worst it's a wash.

Sorry - screwed engine bearing link:

just put some engine brake in oil in the engine, thats brake in oil for a 1:1 engine. i use permatex ultra slick engine assembly lube item# 81950. just a few drops, in the intake, and the plug hole, and the carb. any break in oil made for 1:1 engines should do fine. it will smoke some when you first fire it, dont worry. do NOT put any in the fuel. only put oil made for 2 cycle engines in the fuel.
