I'm getting ready to start making a parts list for my engine, but what i need to know is how do i tell what series type of engine i have. The engine I'm getting ready to rebuild is my Ford 460 BB. But there's differnt series parts and i don't want to buy the wrong parts.

A chilton manual will tell you what series (And each series) and what numbers mean what on your engine. Also should give you all the specs as to year, where it was made and all that fun stuff.

Thank's andy ill dig through the manual when i get home. I went through it once but it was about useless,or it's pretty usefull and I'm just a tool. Iunno to be continued

i know on my chevy 350 v8 i have a few number on my block under a fuel line and those tell me everything i needed to know to get certian parts for it

but this is also and 83 engine

Usually, the engines go by year (1978-96) or something like that. The 460 is a nice engine. Makes big power, weighs a ton, get super low fuel economy, but hell, who cares? What kinda stuff you gonna do to it?

or if its still in the car the vin # has a few digits to let you know info on what type it is google it you'll be amazed on all the info you can find

There should be numbers on the block its self..
The intake if stock will have numbers on it as well.
To find out what heads are one it...Numbers will found under the valve covers..

Here is a link for the heads..
http://www.aacncclub.com/FORD_HEAD_CASTING.html#460fordhead

One more thing There will be a set of# on the intake...like 14683275....That will be the firing order..

The 460 are nice engine, low on horespower but the torque will scare yeah if your using it right. I'm not really sure what I'm gonna use it for,I'm not impressing myself with it right now. I'm gonna attempt to squeeze 300hp outta it on pump gas. They make a 514 Cube Inch stroker crankshaft that I'm looking into. My new race engine hopefully.

The orignal idea i had was to pickup a pinto wagon and create a dragster. I am serious about making a pinto wagon. I think this Engine would be a riot in that style car

lmk if you ever wont to get rid of it!!! lol. i got a 390 for my truck but looking for a 460. 300hp on pump gas should be fairly easy. and atleast i'm not the only 1 that wonts a pinto drag car. lol.

What kinda 390? FE? I wouldn't mind having a smaller engine since this one is a pig on mileage

Thought all the Fords were pigs on the gas mileage.
We have a full size Bronco. About 12mpg. Had a pickup with a 400 that got about 6.

I would have thought it would be close to 300hp stock? I had a Torino with a 351, seems like it was 260 or 270hp.

The rods were a weak point in that engine. (unless they changed them later) If ya don't go stroker, I would at least replace those. My dad had a 74 model. 70,000 miles it was knocking. Never was ran hard. Only 460 I had apart, but the caps on it looked pretty wimpy for an engine that size. Read somewhere that the 429 rods were the same?

Never built an engine for perfomance. Would like to try one. Got a couple of 302's. Thought about building one for the Bronco.
All of mine have been just rebuilds. Lot's of patch jobs. Mostly pickups and heavy equipment. Been a lot of years. Sorta miss it.

How about some pics on the build?
Always thought the Pinto would make a nice drag car too. Couple of Vega's running around here, but no Pinto.

As far as i know the 429 rod's aren't the same as the 460,but my understanding is that the 429 and the 460 are the same block with a differnt stroke (don't quote me on that). The engine i have is pretty solid, I'm just looking for something new. The 460's are a torque engine, on a computer dyno program i have,It's show's that the 460 only make's about 215 Hp, But the torque is about 400ftlbs. The downside about the 460's are that there really only good for pulling. The power band on these engine's are flat and move up and down within about 5hp throught the rpm range

When i get a chance to actually build the engine ill take pictures, but i have a long road ahead of me,with a massive chunk of my wallet that will be missing,So the chance's of seeing a build thread probablly won't happen till late summer. By then I'm hoping to atleast have a differnt rig for the engine,if not ill have one hell of a F-250

For my rig i get about 3mpg in town, yes i did say 3mpg. But on the highway I'm getting about 15mpg, don't ask me how i manage that but i do. Ford 302's are alright engine's but for building a bullet, i would use a 351windsor,360/390 These engine's are lighter than the big block's and can make just as much power and would probablly be cheaper on gas than your standard 429/460.

This entire project is going to require all new rods, crank, pistons, carb, camshaft, head's,oilpan. The list goes on, Hopefully when i get around to starting it, I can afford to start it and finish it. If not ill save this project till i can trully toss the cash around

Man i wish i could afford some of the projects that you guys do. But i guess it all just comes with age (not ment to offend) I have a 350 that needs the carb rebuilt but i can not afford to have somone rebuild it and dont have the talent to do it myself and i've also been told that there are certian things that once messed with will never been the same. So i dont want to dive in and mess things up even more because as off right now i figure I'm getting about 5 miles to the gallon but there again my speedo is off by 10 mph and that would mean my mileage is off also.

But sorry for running this thread off the tracks but it would be great to see this build take place id be interested in following it.

good luck

Done a couple of carbs on the kitchen table. Living room coffee table has seen at least one.
Guess that would be a sign of a true redneck?

Did a 351 years ago. Somewhere on the truck it was marked 400. We didn't look any further into it and just ordered the crank for the 400. Pistons ended up coming a little out of the top of the block. Know another guy that went the other way. All we had at the time was Fords, so our crank ended up in another pickup.
Was thinking the 302 and 351 windsor were the same block, different stroke?

Lots of info on the net on the 460. Even found a forum. http://460ford.com/
Good luck with the build and that chunk out of your wallet. Looking foward to the pics.

I'm not sure if the 302 and the 351w are the same block, they may very well be but i have my doubts.

This project is going to be a ongoing project for a couple year's. I'm 17 with a small cash flow so basiclly ill be spreading it out. I may or may not use a pinto,My old man's trying to talk me into getting a 66 F-100 so we'll have twin's.

Carb's can be difficult to build,What kinda carb is it? i may be able to help you with that carb.
BY the way when you buy a rebuild kit, they give your destructions

See, you want to use a Pinto because of me!

Ah schuks, GN. I'm getting misty just thinking about it!

Don't flatter yourself, Actually the reason I'm using a pinto is, The car 2 car's my dad owned when i was really young were my faviorte, 1 was a blue/rust pinto wagon on mag wheels, the other was a buick skylark turbo v6. The pinto was the coolest thing id ever seen(at 5 year's old) and I've been wanting one ever since, I want the pinto,Dad want's another vega. Nothing like having two of the coolest car's in the world.
