so i just got my first electric truck, its a stampede. its used and was missing the Tx/Rx. and well lets just say electric rigs arent as intuitive to me as nitro rigs. so my question is how do you get juice to the Rx? i kind of figured that it would get power from the motor battery but no leads for it, and doesn't look like there is anywhere to put a battery pack for exclusively the radio system. so anybody got any tips for this electric noob?

The esc powers the rx.

how does it hook up to the ESC? all the wires coming from the esc are terminated. I've got two heavy leads to the engine, two heavy leads to the battery, and then two wires, probably like 18gauge going to an on/off switch, and the lead for the i assume the throttle?

Post a pic of you esc if you can.

i dont have a way to get any pictures at teh moment, but its a traxxas xl-1

the small white and blue wires run to the on off switch
one set (1 red 1 black)of the heavy wires to the engine
one set (1 red 1 black)of the heavy wires to the battery

and then the triple wire (red/white/black) looks like the wires that come off of a servo i have that going to one of the servo positions on the Rx.

is that supposed to be going to the batt position on the Rx?

this link looks exactly like what I'm dealing with. http://www.aarnold.com/Traxxas/Stampede_Pics/ESC_XL-1_1.jpg

okay cool, thanks SNG and RCAddict.

just one question because i guess this is now just befuddling to me, how does the esc get the Tx throttle signal?

The plug with 3 small wires coming out of the ESC goes into the throttle channel on the receiver not the battery port on the receiver, the ESC has a built in BEC (battery eliminator circuit) it takes power from the main battery and sends it to the receiver through the plug with the three small wires that plugs into the throttle channel which in turn powers the receiver and steering servo...So all of your electronics run off of the main battery pack...

okay so that 3 wire plug coming from the ESC goes to the throttle channel on the RX and will supply power to the RX. so then there is nothing that connects to the battery terminal on the RX?

Yes, that goes to the batt position on the RX.

it doesn't though.

it goes to the throttle channel output on the RX.

all the positive, and negative terminals in the RX are simply joined in parallel anyway.

the ESC also has a voltage regulator, normally 5 or 6 volts, so you can run the RX, even with an 11.1volt lipo, or whatever, so you're not giving the RX too much voltage :)

one issue can be, that the regulator in the ESC may only be rated at 1amp, so you could potentially run into problems if your steering servo draws more current than this ;)

That would be correct, and it should work just fine for a racing/bashing application, a lot of us guys that run crawlers add a Castle Creations BEC that ups the amps to 10 because we run servos with over 300oz of torque for the steering which draws so much power that the receiver doesn't get enough and causes glitching....It also allows you to set the voltage from between4.8 volts and 9 volts with a Castle Programmer, I run mine a 6 volts and it works great....Here is what it looks like
