So I purchased a HPI Racing E-Firestorm the other day, and at the moment it is being repaired. I was driving it around on the first day, and it started making this funny whining noise, along with a funny smell. But being a complete novice I had not clue what might have happened.

So its being taken back and being repaired, and while I was there I bought a bigger battery for it so it'll go quicker.

But I have two main questions:
1) I want a better steering servo so that it'll turn quicker, what would you recommend? Also, a bigger motor would be lovely, something with better overall performance, again, what would you recommend? (I'm from the UK if that matters)

2) What general things about the E-Firestorm should I know? Handling, speed, possible upgrades. Also how does it perform comparatively? Is every petrol head out there gonnah wipe the floor with me?

Thanks, Niall.

EWWWWWW Electric Yuck...what were you thinking asking questions about fruity R/C electric froo froo crap here????

:jk:

I like the Futaba or JR servos for steering I'm still running older models like the S5951 (I think that's the model) they run about 75 bucks...the JR servos are around 120.......
I wouldn't know about the faster motors though....I'm going to do Brushless on my E-maxx soon.....

Castle makes good stuff...I use the 1/18th scale stuff all the time..I just got a setup (from our own PSUnitro) for my TC4...I need to drop that in and see how it goes.....

Yes you do fishy!

as far as servos, it depends on your budget, and if you are using the stock radio system. If you dont have endpoint adjustments on your radio, dont get a digital servo. That said, the Hitec 625,925 are great servos for 1/10, the JR 590 is OK, but a little slow, but faster than stock.

So could I use these on my current set-up? If so where could I get some in the UK?

So thanks so far everyone for helping a newbie out.

But I thought I'd update you on what has happened on my new hobbie.

First things first, I have had two problems with the E-Firestorm so far, both the same thing, although I would like to stress out the first one was accidental and the second was that the guy is a pillock. The first time, I was driving around with my mate who has a small little thing from Argos, I was just mucking around, and we had a slight collision, nothing to major, but it managed to push mine off course and straight into a pillar. After this it started making a funny noise from the engine/diff area along with a funny burning smell. Of course I had no clue what was making the noise so I ended up taking it back to the guy I bought it from, and after a wait it was fixed, what he said it was that the "engine had meshed too tightly" and something about a pinion.

Well anyways while I was waiting I bought a bigger battery for it a NiMH NOSRAM 7.2V 3300 which goes twice as quick as the battery I originally had, god it flies. And I bought some larger shell clips, so it's much easier to get at it now. But anyway I had it back for long enough to muck around and fall in love all over again, and realise I really wanted that servo upgraded. But anyway I let a friend have a go on the crappy battery and the first thing he does is drive it straight onto a curb at full speed... and now the noise is back. So I am going to take it back tomorrow, and ask him to show me how to fix it myself, so if it ever happens again I can fix it.

But I have some plans for it now.

1) Locate a new servo and an even larger battery (what would you recommend for speed and length?) so I can get the most out of the motor already in it.

2)Get a new bumper (More on that below).

3) Get a new shell for it and get a nice paint job put on it. I'm thinking all black with dark silver windows and a metallic silver highlight on the side. I think it would look really nice.

The reason I want a new bumper is because I have kindah got a theory to stop it screwing up again if it gets rammed into a curb and pillar. I have raised the front of the Firestorm by a little bit but enough to notice, and I am going to order a bumper for it off of Ebay, which is alot larger and is slanted, my theory being if it hits a curb the raise and the slant will make it bounce up instead of crashing straight on, and if it hurts something like a pillar it should be absorbed into the pillar.

So right now, its sat in my room getting forlorn until I can fix it. Once its fixed tomorrow I am going to head onto my local abandoned rail line and get some pictures and videos of how it goes, so I might post a few good ones.

But any comments, suggestions for parts and telling me how stupid I was for letting someone else have a go, then shout at me.

Thanks, Niall.

Well, noone seems interested :( But I will update on what has happened anyway.

I know what the problem is with the Firestorm now, when it was having a shock it was forcing the engine forward on its screws/mountings and the cog was overmeshing with the pinion, which was making the noise and the smell, and I can now fix it myself.

But anyways, still looking for advice on what to buy. In the mean while I will post some pics I took while mucking around on a local dirt park. Should be up on a flickr quite soon.
