i want to dye a set of rims that are chrome. i want to keep the chrome look. kind of like laying a candy (sorry its the best way an airbrush artist can think of explaining it) over it. can i do this successfully? has anyone here done it? got pics? do i follow the instructions on the box on how to mix the dye?

I don't think that the dye will coat over the chrome. If you have an airbrush, then you should simply pick up some transparent paint and spray that on there. I think that would work the best. Createx Paints or their Auto Air Series have several colors that you can choose from. The good thing about their paint is that it is water-based so you can combine any colors you want to create your own color.

One of the popular R/C magazines recently did an article about dying chrome wheels, but I've forgotten which one. I'm almost positive they used Rit, though.

i dyed them today. i just made them all black and went in and added some createx auto air sparkle white to make them pop very nicely when they get some sun. i could have just painted them in the first place but i was feeling lazy and wanted to try something new today. they look sick now. even thouhg they were ok chrome.

Fridge, can you post some pics. I would definitely like to check it out. I think when I spray my next touring car body, I am going to spray the rims to match. That Createx Auto Air is some killer stuff. Especially the sparkle series when mixed with some transparent.

DIG liQ i can't do because i dont use a digi cam. i use auto air for everything. i do airbrush art to keep my money levels up and auto air is fantastic for a # of things this sparkle white is just so crazy to me it just seems like it fits perfect on there, if your going to spray it on your wheels go down to your local auto motive paint supplier (or strauss, auto zone anybody who stocks spray can clears) and get one that is fuel resistant. because the exhaust can spoil the auto airs finish and the nitro will eat regular clears away (eg.my chamaleon chassis)

Too bad I can't catch any pics. Yeah, I always put on a final protective coat over the auto air. For my budget, I simply use a couple coats of laquer paint. Walmart for $2 a can. If I need to put a clear coat on it or am using a transparent color and don't want a dark background, I will use clear laquer. Otherwise, I will hit it w/ a couple of coats of either black or white, depending on the color I spray. I have had great results using the laquer as my protectant over the auto air. The only thing you have to do is to make sure that the createx is completely/thoroughly dry. I usually wait several days before I put on the protectant coat.

Anyway, it sounds like you were able to dye the chrome. Good job.

I have used the following series and find them awsome.
Aluminum Bases
Transparent Color
Pearl Color
Metalic Color
Gem Chameleon Color Shift FX Colors
Hi-Lite Interference Color Shift FX Colors
Cosmic Sparkle Colors

The good thing is that they are water-based. This means no fumes and no mess, plus you can combine any of the colors to give you that perfect color that you are looking for. If you mess up or don't like what you've sprayed, no problem. You can simply put some water to it and wash it off.

It works great if you have a bleed or run, such as on the windows or graphics. I will simply take a wet q-tip and rub the paint where it ran. It comes right off, like an eraser does a pencil mark.

I usually buy mine off the internet, from Mr.Art.

Depending on which style you get, a 4 oz bottle usually runs about $5. I am constanly mixing my own colors so it is hard to tell, but 2 oz is about the average to spray a complete body. You can't beat that price and the quality of paint you get. I would highly recommend the Auto Air to everyone.

I just did my stock Maxx rims w/ Rit dye in boiling water, and they turned out pretty damn cool!! It beats buying new rims I'm gonna beat the hell out of anyway!!
