Hair dye? I don't think so. You can't judge by time either, you have to check the color.

Go get some Rit dye, they sell it at many food stores in the detergent isle, or at wal-mart. I use the liquid version rather than the tablets. Follow the instructions on the bottle as far as mixing, I always mix it just a little bit stronger than they suggest. But basically you bring water to a boil, add the dye, and put the parts in. I would do all the parts you want to dye at the same time so you can get them all the same color. Just pull one out and check it to see if it's where you want it, if not throw it back in, if it is pull them all out. For black just leave them in a good long time or they will end up looking purplish rather than black.

+1 I always add some table salt to the dye also.

Also use an old pot and don't get the dye on the stove or counter tops it is a b!+ch to get off. If you have a vent hood on the stove turn that sucker on high.

Rit dye is the shiznit! I've died a bunch of delrin with it, the liquid and powder.

dumb question....but are you guys dying the black parts to another color?

You can not dye black another color. You can dye any other color black though. Plus some companies like RPM sell white parts so that you can dye them any color you want.

These are my last dye job. I use the RIT powder on these. I also wanted to make sure it didn't get too dark so I was cautious of how much dye I put in the water. Remember, you can always go darker but you can't go lighter so if you want it very light, put very little dye in the water. If it doesn't get it dark enough, add a little bit more dye until you ge the shade you are looking for. You probably won't get a "lime" green but you could certainly get a more pale green than the dye could offer at full strength.

I've used the same package of Rite Dye for over a year now. Plumb Black it was the crystal kind. Just pour it in a large pan from a sencond hand store. I boil the parts the same amount of time at the same temp. The parts come out looking light. They will turn darker as they dry. You can always put them back in to make them darker but the other way of course doesn't work. Anyways once I am done dying the parts, say some rims. I just turn off the heat and set the pan away. It returns the dye to it crystal form once the water evaporates. When you are ready to dye some more parts just add water back to the pan and heat it up again.

The second hand store pot suggestion is a very good one. First time I dyed something I used one of my wifes teflon coated pots, figured I was good to go ,it's coated right, man was I wrong, lol. When I was done I cleaned it all up, or so I thought, then my wife decided to boil some pasta a few days later. I hear her in the kitchen saying WTF! my pasta is turning black. Needless to say I now own that pot and she got a brand new one. :hehe:
