DVD players

I bought a DVD/VCR unit about three or four years ago. My kids got some videos for Christmas but they won't play on the unit, they work fine in a computer. Is it the security measures they are putting on DVDs now, since older DVDs that we have had for a while work fine?

Everything just says DVD, nothing about Blue Ray or HD DVD. They will start but are very choppy. They hang up for 30 seconds for every 1 of playing.

That's a pretty good sign of the player starting to go 'south'. I've never been a fan of the combo units. I know a lot of people like them due to having a big number of VHS tapes, but there is just more chances of dust getting into the unit and causing problems.

I don't think its going south, it still works fine on older DVDs. I wonder if it has anything to do with format on the newer DVDs.

I would go and buy a new cheap $30 DVD Player and use that for DVD's and the Combo Unit for VHS.

As far as I know there hasn't been a major change in the formatting of DVDs. There are newer (last couple of years) copyright protection schemes, but they don't affect the playing of the discs, only the 'ripping' of the disc when trying to make a copy.
That's strange that only the newer discs won't play.

Cleaning didn't help, I bought a new one this evening and all is well.
