drivetrain help please!!

I have a 4.6 X, and I'm having trouble with something in the drivetrain. It runs great, but now, when I put it on the ground to make some warmup rounds, I gas on it a couple of times and it acts like it kicks into neutral. Then I can let it idle for a second and it seems to "re-engage" the itself. I just got done taking it apart, I checked the tranny gears, bell gear, clutch, spur gear and slipper clutch. I cleaned the bell and clutch, put it back together, and still the same thing.

The only thing I can think of is that I don't know what a wore out clutch looks like, but, nothing looks melted or wore out and all the gears have perfect teeth and all the dog bones and cups are in great shape. Oh yeah, the diffs are good to.

The truck just has a little over a gallon ran through it.

If you are running teflon clutch shoes they might just be glazed over. Take some sand paper and ruff them up, Don't take too off them though.
 
Does it kick into neutral right away or runs fine and THEN suddenly stops ?
 
Well, it runs fine till I let off the throttle and get back on it, like when I'm turning around. Also, I forgot to mention that the bell and spur gear turns when it's acting up, so it has to be in the tranny. It also does it sometimes when shifting into second gear, it will run up till it's suppose to shift, then its like it hits neutral. It doesn't lock up or anything it just rolls to a stop, and then it will eventually lock back in and were good to go till it does it again.

Is there anything else that can malfuncion in the tranny besides the gear teeth, I checked the gears for a second time and there still in prestine condition.
 
I am gonne go by the assumption that you dont have reverse and since it is brand new it wouldnt be something like it has revesre but no servo installed so it just goes which ever way the arm wants to.With that said i would have to say it sounds like the slipper pad is too loose on the spur gear,try tightening the nut down on the front of the spur see if it helps if thats not it or its a little better than try replacing the slipper pad or both spur and pad.From what your explaining that sounds like it would be it,if you can accelerate slowly and it seems fine but then run it and slow-down then hit it again and it slips thats what i can think of,since the tranny in a savage is almost explosion proof i wouls have to say that its not in the trany.Just my thoughts hope it helps
 
Well, when it stops moving it like something is totally disengaged, if it was the slipper wouldn't it seem to try to move? I mean, just to be sure, I went to my lhs and bought a new spur and slipper.

I hope that's what it is, but, when it's acting up you can pick it up off the ground rev it up and the wheels won't even attempt to move, then after it idles a second it will click, like something catches, then it will opperate fine for a while.
 
well if it is totally disengaging then yah it sounds like something in the tranny.My savage sometimes doesn't go into reverse the whole way and will stay in neutral which is why i asked about that and if the rod for reverse isnt adjusted right it can go to neutral while driving.But if you dont have reverse on yours and it is totally disengaging then it might be in the tranny.I beat the snot out of mine and dont have troubles but the only thing that comes to mind would be the clutches inside the tranny for gear shifting first and second,since you said you took it apart and all looked good no stripped gears,or it could be the shift linkage inside the tranny for when you add reverse.That may not be all the way in forward and could be possibly popping into neutral.But i have never had a savage tranny apart so i can't point you right to the problem area.I would say look up the exploded view on Hpi.com and see if everything looks good.Sorry bout being long winded but just trying cover all that comes to mind.
 
Thanks for the help silverbird I'll try looking again to see if there is anything outta whack.
 
there is a one way bearing thats rides on the input shaft for the gears so check that and check the shift points it almost sounds like it too tight and not engaging at the correct rpm. those two would be my starting point. mine will do it on start up once in a great while. so look at the tranny diagram and you be able to fine the problem.
 
i had the same problem. I broke the pin (86094) in the cups for the drive shaft. It look like its there but broke in half.
