RC Driving Style
Well, I just painted my third body, an HPI Skyline GTR(R34), the scheme is black with single silver stripe, and I used only about 1/5 of the decals provided. I intend to turn my car into a drifter, so I needed the JDM look, new wheels, and non-grippy tires. So far I have just the body. I need help on suspension setups, but I assume it follows the same guidelines as a full size car, so I guess I'll need stiffer springs. I'm also interested in full size drifting, and I'm going to the D1 Gran Prix in Irwindale.

I found a website a few weeks ago about RC Drifting actually!
Here it is!
They've got some setups in there too.
Actually I think I stumbled upon it when another member replied to a thread about something else. Can't remember what though

Anyways there ya go :)
That should help with some of the setups you can try

Oh your poor soul! Drifting is when you slide the rear of a car out around a corner and hold that slide or drift.

I was thinking in reference to the site above and the relation to the paint scheme that the initial post talked about. Now that I read it a little more in depth I see that they are talking about the drifting I knew. Hell, I thought they were talking about some sort of paint scheme which prompted me to ask what drifting was.

Drifting aka Power slide.

What kind of car do you have?? That may help in trying to determine what kind of setup you will need to accomplish your goal to drift. Let me ask you a question... Do you watch Initial D??? That's the greatest if you ask me.. I have every episode.. Anyway, pretty much drifting is not a power slide. Power slide uses the concept of oversteer where as drifting, you are in a slide much before you are actually in a turn.. General setup which should be for all cars is to have some negative camber in the front with the tires toed in slightly. The rear is pretty much straight, or no camber and no toe.... Go straight and just before the turn, turn opposite and then cut into the turn. Make sure your batteries are good and charged. A high torque servo works the best. Once you've got the car set up right, you should not be lifting the throttle up around the entire turn. I've got some footage of me drifting, but how do you get an 8mm film onto a computer? Good luck my man... Oh, and I used some cheap old tires. No need to ruin perfectly good tires.

Well my ntc3 isn't running and i'm inspired. I think i'm gonna use their setup and see if I can't get it drifting. It'll take a few hours though, novarossi isn't working so i'll have to swap engines and re-do the setup. I hope it works.

I have a Yokomo GT-4 RTR, and I don't get Initial D where I live, but I play the arcade game for hours at a time, I love that game.
I even considered printing out some Initial D decals to put on my Skyline.
The method of drifting you suggest is called feinting, and my bro says that's the best way to go.
I have probably hours of drift videos on my computer, but I would love to see R/C drift vids.

When I first got my car, I drifted it on the stock tires, nothing dramatic, but definitely at a loss of traction. My stock tires are worn completely through, after about a week of driving. However, I haven't driven my car for more than a month because my LHS screwed up an order for me header. I just hope that once it's running again I will get re-acquainted pretty quickly.
Thanks for the advice,
Culver

Love the game... Got the AE86 just like Takumi from the series and I've beat the game... Got the F1 engine and redlines at 11k rpms.... You do know about starting in 3rd gear in that game right?? Anyway, to get back on the subject... I hear the GTR-4 is pretty fast. Haven't actually seen one run in person. Has the initial take off of the car? I know that my Mugen jumps off the line, while my Reflex doesn't quite have the bite off the line, but is a stable car. I use the Reflex for parking lot playing and use the Mugen for the races... Not the fastest car in the bunch, but it's all in how you drive.. I'm pretty good at drifting my Mugen, but the Reflex is still a tad on the difficult side.. It wants to flip sometimes.. I'll still mess around with it as soon as this monsoon season ends. Well, seems like a monsoon with all the rain we've been getting...

Well I did the setup tips like on the website and blew my foams within 5 minutes. It's a little hard to get the car into a good drift though.

Don't use foams... They will be shredded very quickly unless the surface is a smooth smooth surface.. I'd just use some old rubber tires. I used some old HPI original tires. Glued the crap out of them and let it go.. Once you get it, it'll look amazing, but only lasts for a very short time....

Yeah I got some good drifts going. I got a few more runs before the foams are completely gone. They were poop anywho. So it doesn't matter. I got a few old tires that i'm gonna put on next.

I'm just trying it in my street right now. I know a place where I could probably get some good drifting going.

The Trueno in that game is sick, the normal one will work most of the other, faster cars(except my S2000).

The GT-4 is geared for top speed, so it doesn't quite jump off the line, but the stability is pretty good, especially for having no wing. The only time it wants to flip is in gravel(it has flipped before, but only at about 5mph, it was kinda pathetic), and I probably shouldnt be driving it in gravel anyway. I have so far only driven it at the end of my street, which is very very rough asphalt, which would explain the tires. Its probably easier to lose traction on such a rough surface.

P.S. I custom-fabbed TEIN and HKS stickers for the Skyline to give it the JDM/Drift look.:bling:

Far From it. A power slide is slinging the car side ways and basically letting it just slide. Drift is actually a controlled method of takeing a turn using both hands on the wheel while using both feet work work brake and gas pedals make the turn. Drifting is more than popping a clutch and "fish tailing" you car its really damn hard and I've got a rim to prove it, lol.

i realy wish sportmaxxs could drift!
so I'm working on it.. buggy tires and some really firm and low springs!! what kind of gearing changes do you make? itsnt drifting impossible with front-wheel-drive or 4wd or allwheeldrive?

FWD is more ass dragging. But if you do get someone who's good, they can make it look good...but for the most part, fwd "drifting" is pointless

4wd drifting is possible and there are a lot of people that can do it...especially the ones in Japan. It's pretty sweet to watch actually

Well a FWD can't do the book term of drifting but they can never the less cause I've seen a 99 civic with b18c5 out show my ass in parking lot, and i was in a damn 2000 lbs RWD car. AWD is crazy they can drift while the front tires pull the car even tighter around the apex. Crazy good handling
