Dovetail Joints

I am going to build a new stand for my tv and have some shelves built into the sides to hold all my books and school stuff. I have been making some drawings on paper and using some CAD software to see how it will go together. I understand the concept of a dovetail, but have never made one myself before.
I want to have the two joined pieces stained different colors.
Has anyone tried this before? I know most of the time two different types of wood are used and therefore a clear coat is all that is needed because the woods are already different colors.
But, I'm a college kid with no budget for crazy exotic beautiful wood.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

I'm sure you can find all the info you want by searching for Dovetailing.

With the local Boston accent, he's called "Nomm".

A router, the correct bit and a dovetailing jig and you're good to go.

we have always been envious of the yankee workshop. Every power tool you could want, AND each has its own permanent location on the shop floor. I tried looking around the site this morning before work, but could only find plans for sale.
I attempted my first dovetail today after work by doing it with a coping saw (i think thats how you spell it).
The old man on youtube made it look way easier free hand. I ended up with a crazy bevel, then tried the other side with the scroll saw.
Now I just have to find a super sale on the wood lol. Ill probably post pics along the way for those who are interested.

Although there wouldnt be a wood grain unless you papered it or painted some on, you could use mdf and just do one peice darker than the other. MDF is my favorite type of material (wood) to work with. You can do SO many things with it. The best thing I've done with it was on a box I did for a customer a few years ago where I made the port opening a curved/rounded edge on both sides instead of just a square edge, was super easy and looked like a very expensive piece.

I made a coffee table out of white pine and mdf and you wouldnt know it was mdf after a few dark coats.

I've never done anything with mdf except sub boxes and then stapled material over them lol.
it feels like i would be cheating myself if i went that route

the links helped because I found another video and realized why my lines were so crooked. I was using the wrong saw, and the blade was flexing too much making my lines go crazy. The dovetail jig works great for making drawers or other similar items where two edges can fit together with mutiple "tails." The route I'm going with mine is a single, larger tail. I really want the joint to stand out and be noticeable.
I've always wanted to make something with the pocket screw jig. its reallly neat the way you can hide the screw holes. (might need something like this for a secret reinforcement) lol.
Hopefully I can save my solidworks drawing as a jpeg and share the design.

Was watching "Storage Wars" the other night. One of those guys ended up with a still. Said he wasn't able to go to WV to research it, so he found some "hillbilly's" in CA that knew all about it. We are everywhere!

In my high school chemistry class all those decades ago, we actually had an operating still. We used it to make methanol from grass clippings to run the school's lawn mowers.
