Any one here train their own dogs as far as "Stay", "come" and "sit" goes? I wanna get a new doggy but I MUST beable to get it to come and stay when I tell it to. My last dog didnt like to stay and he is now gone to heaven because of that and I really dont wanna lose another one. But I want and need to beable to teach it fast and with not too much effort...

Tips would be great.

I'm thinking of a border collie. They seem to be very smart and I see tons of them on the shelters here that are young and need a chance. Would it be a problem if its not a puppy to teach?

I've taught a 2 year old and a 5 year old to NEVER leave the property borders, even on the front side where the road is. My last one would run 90 miles an hour to chase a rabbit and screech to a halt as soon as the rabbit left the yard.
Border Collies are BRILLIANT and they enjoy nothing more than learning new things.

Border Collies are probably the easiest to train, as a puppie or an adult, i had no problems with my shepherd either.

And good for you for looking in shelters!!!

We have two lab's - both of which have never been to a dog trainer. Our oldest, 4yr Bailey, knows stay, sit, lay, shake (paw), kiss, "with me", and "leave it". Our youngest, 6month Mocha, knows most if not all of them but has her days. Then again she still has lots of puppy left.

Both have been trained mostly by me and a bit from the wife. I wish I could give you some tips, but honestly a Lab is probably the smartest dog I've ever seen. It usually only takes being showed a few times and they know it... that and given a few treats in between. :D

On a side note, both dogs know not to leave the yard. I have and do go inside the house with both dogs outside unleashed and both don't even get on the side walk that goes in front of the house. It's funny our neighbors comment all the time, even just today, how they just stay put. They run around tackling each other but stay within the boundaries. I'm telling ya, labs are very smart!

Dogs are only as smart as their owners, and MY dogs are geniuses. :D

Truth is, there's no such thing as a stupid dog, only a stupid owner.

How are you guys able to keep them from leaving the property? What/how did you reprimand them, if you did, when they tried?

Use a long lead so they can wander a little. When they get to the line they shouldn't cross say, "Stop" very sharply and hold them from going any farther with a tug on the leash. Do this several times a day for several days while walking them. After several days let them walk with you over the same territory without the lead, and when they get to the set limit, again reinforce it with "Stop". After a while you can stand in one place and just watch them from a distance and the word "Stop" will eventually tell them where they can't go.
When they stop, praise them. When you call them back, praise them. No treats since that's only for tricks.
They will do a lot more for you just with friendship and praise.
