A Tamiya XBG - Mercedes CLK Vodafone w/ O.S FS - 12SS ( 2.11cc) with pull start ??
My son got one and we have had nothing but problems with the .12ss motor.
This car was great to break in and tune..everything went perfect, started very easily, ran awsome....after about 2 weeks, it started making a horrible loud metal clacking noise when you went to pull start it...it was hard to start(not normal) and IF you got it to start that noise was LOUD.
I tore the engine down atleast 5 times and could not find anything out of place, broke, bad wear, ect.
I finally ordered a new crankshaft & starter shaft..this seamed to fix the "noise" for about one week.....now the noise is back and it is unreal to start.

Can some one please help??anything to try or check at this point would be great. If i can't figure it out..I'm just going to try to find another .12 or maybe .15 motor to put in it and scrap that 12SS..

Thanks,

Scott

Scott, it is a good chance it is the one way bearing for the pull start. It is either seized up due to gunk build up or it is on it's way out (worn out). Take the pull start off the back of the motor and turn the bearing that meets the pull start. If it turns both ways or is hard to turn, it it bad. In some cases you can clean the bearing if it is hard to turn, relube and reinstall it, but most times it is a safe bet just to replace it. Check that first as it is easy and a cheap fix if a replacement is needed.

On edit:

What do you mean by a "Starter Shaft"? I thought you had a pull start? There is only one shaft typically on these motors, the crankshaft.

Thanks Revo,
The starter shaft is the shaft that goes from the pull start and meets up with the piston rod right at the crankshaft....one end of it is where the one way bearing goes, the other end is flat and has a notch that mates up with the crank shaft.
I checked the motor diagram and it is called the "starting shaft".

One way bearing...I did check this out when i had the motor torn down before ordering the parts....it does seem fine and only turns one way..but there could be an issue with it. I might go ahead and order a replacement, maybe i'll start replacing one part at a time till i figure out the problem..prosses of elimination i guess?

The one way bearing is a weak link in most engines. As to the two shafts, now I know what you are referring to. I was thinking two seperate shafts at two points in the case.
